  been called "the last frontier!" Green-roof infrastructure is a proven technology
  in Europe where millions of square feet of rooftops are radically transforming
  the roofing industry. Green roofs can help exploit underutilized rooftops. Now
  all across North America more green roofs are being installed. Are you ready
  for the arrival of this fast growing industry?
 Region 6 invites you to join us in San Francisco, California
  for our Summer Technical Program to be held on August 6, 2001 at the Ramada
  Inn San Francisco Airport North, located just north of the San Francisco Airport.
  This intensive one-day workshop on Green Roofs, which runs from 7:30 AM to 5:00
  PM and includes continental breakfast and lunch, will introduce you to the green
  roof concept, the benefits of green roofs, roof design and detailing, landscape
  design and maintenance, as well a case studies of several high-profile projects.
A summary of each program topic and the speaker biographies are
  as follows:

INTRODUCTION TO GREEN ROOFS by Steven Peck This presentation
  will introduce green roof technology and describe some of the many drivers that
  will help create this new, multi million-dollar niche roofing market. It will
  also provide an overview of the latest green-roof infrastructure development
  work and technical research in Canada, and outline some of the remaining steps
  required to turn roofs into a new force for cleaner air and water and healthier
  cities. Steven Peck is the founder and Executive Director of the private sector
  coalition, Green Roofs for Healthy Cities. He is also the co-author of "Greenbacks
  for Green-Roofs: Forging a New Industry in Canada" which examines the benefits
  and barriers to establishing a green roof industry. Green-Roofs for Healthy
  Cities is actively working to develop a green roof infrastructure in North America.

SETTING THE STANDARDS: INCENTIVES THAT DRIVE THE MARKET by
  Tom Liptan
ECOROOFS (GREENROOFS): INTEGRATING STORMWATER MANAGEMENT AND ENERGY
  CONSERVATION WITH SITE AND ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN. ALTERNATIVES INCLUDE VEGETATED
  ROOFS; ROOF GARDENS, STORMWATER PLANTERS, INFILTRATION GARDENS, AND OTHERS GREEN
  TECHNIQUE
 Information will be provided on the activities of the City of
  Portland's Ecoroof Program, including new zoning codes, financial incentives
  and other measures being employed by the city to encourage the installation
  of vegetated roofs. Focus will be the design, construction and maintenance of
  several Portland demonstration projects and an overview of what the city has
  learned. Comparisons of these alternatives with conventional designs in terms
  of stormwater management, energy conservation, aesthetic values costs, maintenance,
  and other considerations will also be presented. Tom Liptan is a registered
  Landscape Architect and works as an Environmental Specialist with the City of
  Portland, Bureau of Environmental Services. He has been nationally recognized
  as an authority on ecoroofs (green roofs) and other low impact development techniques.
  As a member of the City's NPDES (Phase 1) Municipal Stormwater Program, his
  assignment includes stormwater monitoring, site and stormwater design and research,
  education and outreach, and implementation of demonstration projects. He is
  actively involved in landscape architecture and public works associations and
  has several years' experience working for planning and landscape architectural
  consulting firms.

 WATERPROOFING SYSTEM SELECTION, DESIGN AND ANALYSIS by Ken
  Klein
  A discussion on the requirements for viable waterproofing systems in a green
  roof assembly and a review of several appropriate waterproofing systems. This
  discussion will focus on membrane application design requirements and consensus
  design standards. Kenneth A. Klein is a Principal with Simpson Gumpertz & Heger
  Inc. and has sixteen years experience in the investigation and design of major
  commercial, institutional, and residential buildings for waterproofing issues
  including the integrity of curtain walls, roofs, plaza decks and below-grade
  waterproofing. His expertise has allowed him to work on a wide-range of structures
  from residential and high-rise buildings to buildings of historic significance.
  Ken has consulted with architects, contractors, and building owners to analyze
  and repair water intrusion problems and construction defects. Well known in
  the industry, Ken frequently lectures to attorneys, contractors, architects,
  and other design professionals regarding building envelope design and remediation.

DEFENDING A GREEN ROOF: DETAILING OF THE WATERPROOF THE ASSEMBLY
  by Gerson Burs
  This program will cover a defensive strategy for detailing green roofs. We'll
  seek to identify several threats to the selected waterproofing system and proposed
  some detailing approaches that may prevent damage to the waterproofing membrane
  system at the heart of a green roof. Gerson S. Bers is a Managing Associate,
  Western Region with Gale Associates, Inc. Mr. Bers is a Physical Sciences graduate
  of the University of Maryland and has more than 18 years experience in building
  envelope technology. He is currently entering his 12th year with Gale's Building
  Technology Division. Mr. Bers participates in the forensic analysis, design,
  and construction management for building envelope systems throughout the Western
  US and Alaska. Mr. Bers is an enthusiastic lecturer on maintenance of building
  envelope systems and the author of several building envelope related articles.
  He was most recently quoted on fire protection considerations for residential
  roofing in Sunset Magazine (May 2001).

LANDSCAPE DESIGN: SOIL AND PLANT SELECTION by Theodore Osmundson,
  FASLA
  Mr. Osmundson will present an illustrated overview of roof garden design and
  construction based on his over forty years of roof garden experience and worldwide
  discussions with landscape architects. This study with include design input
  from Russia to Western Australia with special emphasis on those of Germany.
  Theodore Osmundson, FASLA, holds a Bachelor of Science degree in landscape architecture
  from Iowa State University, is a Fellow of the American Society of Landscape
  Architects and a Past President of ASLA. He had practiced landscape architecture
  in San Francisco since 1946. In 1960 he designed the pioneering three acre roof
  garden for the Kaiser Center in Oakland, and has since designed 15 other roof
  gardens. He has also taught roof garden design at Harvard University for eight
  years, and had participated in numerous conferences and symposiums on roof gardens.
  Mr. Osmundson has written for various periodicals and books on roof gardens
  including "The Changing Technique of Roof Garden Design" in Landscape Architecture
  Magazine in 1981 (with he won the Bradford Williams Medal for writing the most
  important article). He is author of "Roof Gardens, History and Construction",
  a 320 page,
heavily illustrated, and comprehensive book. It is the first book
  in English on roof gardens.

PLANT SELECTION & MAINTENANCE by Paul Kephart
  Creating a sustainable roof garden begins with proper plant selection, design,
  and application. A wide variety of native plant materials are adapted to green
  roof conditions. Plants selected from local native plant populations are adapted
  to regional climatic conditions and will perform with little water, maintenance,
  and nutrients. Utilizing an ecological approach when designing a green roof
  will integrate the roof garden with nature; providing diversity, aesthetics,
  and habitats not otherwise available in the urban world. Paul Kephart has twenty
  years of comprehensive consulting experience pertaining to botanical survey,
  biological assessment, project mitigation, land stewardship programs, and land
  management planning, and is an expert in range and pasture management and large
  scale native grass seed and native plant nursery production. Paul specializes
  in the design of native plant gardens, roof gardens, native grass meadows, landscape
  and ecological restoration and is the Manager of the Rana Creek Habitat Restoration
  Project in upper Carmel Valley California. This project includes: one hundred
  acre native grass and wildflower production, four acre native plant nursery,
  and the significant restoration of oak woodland and riparian habitat of the
  15,000 acre ranch. He also in involved in the state-wide classification, collection,
  and propagation of native grasses, wildflowers, shrubs, and trees for agronomic,
  restoration, and nursery production.

CASE STUDY: FLUID APPLIED SYSTEMS by Charles Cronenweth American
  Hydrotech, Inc.,
  the manufacturer of Monolithic Membrane 6125® rubberized asphalt waterproofing,
  was the first major manufacturer to introduce green/garden roofing in the United
  States. Now a well-established system, Hydrotech's Garden Roof® Assembly has
  achieved such success largely due to its high-performance waterproofing. In
  this seminar three major, high profile Garden Roof projects will be discussed:
  The Gap Building at 901 Cherry (San Bruno, CA), the Latter Day Saints Conference
  Center (Salt Lake City, UT) and the Vancouver Public Library (Vancouver, BC,
  CANADA). The presentation will also provide tools for assessing competitive
  systems in a waterproofing and green roofing context. Charles Cronenweth brings
  with him a wealth of industry information, gained over 26 years in the waterproofing/roofing
  industry. Prior to joining American Hydrotech, Inc. in 1987, Charles worked
  in the Built-Up Roofing division of Johns Manville Company, and then as a Division
  7 independent sales representative. As Western Region Sales Manager for Hydrotech,
  Charles has developed a keen understanding of green roofing. </p>

CASE STUDY: THERMOPLASTIC SYSTEMS by Peter D'Antonio, Sarnafil
 
  has more than 20 years experience in green roof system applications throughout
  Europe and the United States. Mr. D'Antonio will review Sarnafil Green Roof
  Systems for both intensive and extensive designs. Topics will include FLL European
  Test approvals, applications over nailable decks, and important design considerations
  for green roof construction. Mr. D'Antonio will review the recently completed
  Chicago City Hall project, the Chiropractic Center Project, and the Ford Motor
  Company Premium Automotive Headquarters Facility currently under construction
  in Irvine, CA. Peter J. D'Antonio holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University
  of Massachusetts. He has been with Sarnafil Roofing and Waterproofing Systems
  for over 20 years in several sales, marketing, and management positions. Mr.
  D'Antonio serves as the Manager of the Waterproofing Division in the United
  States and as the National Sales Manager for Educational Facilities. Mr. D'Antonio
  has been an active member of the Roof Consultants Institute since 1988. He has
  served on the Board of Directors of the Sealant, Waterproofing and Restoration
  Institute and the Boston Chapter of the Construction Specifiers Institute. In
  addition to his management responsibilities, Mr. D'Antonio also acts as the
  Sarnafil coordinator for the US DOE Rebuild America\Energy$mart Schools Initiative,
  and currently serves as Chairman of the Education and Awareness Committee. Mr.
  D'Antonio has lectured widely on a variety of roofing and waterproofing subjects
  including presentations at the 1999 National APPA Conference, the Conference
  of Massachusetts Building Code Officials, the Midwest APPA and the Southern
  Region Physical Plant Administrators Conference. He has authored articles for
  the US DOE on the benefits of white, reflective roofing and an international
  green building symposium on the development of flexible polyolefin roofing membranes.
  Mr. D'Antonio and his family reside in New Hampshire.
