Best-selling author to speak in Arroyo Grande on solving environmental issues using natural models

(Arroyo Grande, CA)

Toby Hemenway (http://patternliteracy.com) biologist, geneticist and author of the best-selling permaculture design book, Gaia's Garden: A Guide to Home-Scale Permaculture will be appearing at the SLO Down Pub in Arroyo Grande June 17th 6pm-7pm for a lecture and book-signing of his newly released second edition.

Permaculture is a design science that applies the understanding of how natural systems work to the design of human systems. In Gaia's Garden, Hemenway explains how one can apply that understanding to the creation of abundant and diverse landscapes that will support the needs of both humans and wildlife- basically, how we can help clean the air and water, restore life and carbon to the soil to help minimize global climate change, conserve energy, grow healthy food and minimize waste and pollution by redesigning our patterns of development to mimic those of nature.

Hemenway's book has been hailed by pioneer mycologist Paul Stamets as "a milestone for gardeners and landscapers—a fusion of the practical and the visionary—using the natural intelligence of Earth’s symbiotic communities to strengthen and sustain ecosystems in which humans are a partner, not a competitor."

Hemenway traveled extensively around the country interviewing permaculture practitioners and observing how permaculture's principles were being applied to a variety of sites. The second edition of Gaia's Garden includes new color photographs, drawings and expanded information on applying permaculture to urban situations.

Hemenway is also in the area to guest lecture at the San Luis Obispo Permaculture Design Course http://earthflow.com/SLOPDC09.php led by Larry Santoyo, Director of EarthFlow Design Works and one of the pioneers of the sustainability movement in the county as well as the country. Several of Santoyo's designs also appear in the new edition of the book as well.

The lecture and booksigning at the SLO Down Pub http://slodownpub.com/ is free and open to the public over 21 years of age (must have ID).
