OPEN AIR PERFORMANCE & PROJECTION

Sarah Elgart performs DRIFT, followed by screening of the animations of Ondrej Rudavsky.

Choreographer/dancer/director, Sarah Elgart will make the aquatic garden at M&A come alive! As the wife of renowned bamboo artist, Stephen Glassman, she has danced through bamboo installations around the world. With live music and sound by feltlike , this mesmerizing performer will activate the waters and elaborate upon the bamboo bridge. After dusk, the magical world of Eastern European filmmaker and animator, Ondrej Rudavsky, will be projected upon the walls surrounding Here There Be Monsters.

Choreographer/director Sarah Elgart has worked extensively in stage, film, television, circus, alternative venues and more. In film and television she has worked with maverick directors including Curtis Hanson, David Lynch and Julian Temple. In 1991 Elgart founded La Boca Performance Space and MADRES, a performance group of transitional homeless women. Her recent work as a director includes music videos for Mia Doi Todd and Angela Luna. Elgart is presenting new work this October at The Electric Lodge in Venice.

"Mesmerizing", "Hypnotic", "Surreal", "Awe-inspiring"... These are just some of the words to describe the work of Slovakian born Ondrej Rudavsky. His work typically layers 25 to 30 exposures onto the same piece of film. He uses a combination of classical cell and drawn animation intertwined with pixilization and multi-layering. Joshua Siegal of the Museum of Modern Art has suggested that "Rudavsky's layering reflects the layers of artistry that runs thru his family tree. His grandparents were folk artists in Czechoslovakia. His father and mother are both world renowned as sculptors and artists, and his sister Zuzana is a well known textile artist living in New York".

free, donations welcome.

NEXT UP – SEPTEMBER 2006

BUBBLES by Robotecture

A new open-air interactive installation at Materials & Applications called "bubbles" will soon spring to life. This site-specific installation will also represent the first large-scale interactive installation of its kind.

Ideologically, the installation builds upon the legacy of the late-sixties counter-cultural "immaterial" architecture and art installations of the Utopie group, who were inspired in their time by Guy Debord and the Situationists. Now the technology of our times has caught up with the goals of this airy socio-political revolution. Bubbles is a collaborative effort of the offices of Foxlin, NonDesigns and Axel Kilian.

Made possible in part by the Annenberg Foundation and the Pasadena Art Alliance.
