GENERAL PURPOSE

Under the direction of the Program Manager, coordinates the implementation of school gardens and garden education programming in the schools.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed.  The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment.

1.       Under the direction of the Program Manager, will design, implement and monitor school garden activities including: garden planning, design and maintenance; planting; harvesting; ordering of materials; and provide student, docent and teacher education and training within designated timeframe established by Program Manager

2.       Advise schools on strategies for effectively implementing school garden education programs

3.       Coordinate with the school administrators and teachers on various garden and nutrition education related projects

4.       Strong ability to motivate the students to get involved in learning about garden education

5.       Ensure proper utilization, safety and care of equipment as well as proper storage for each school

6.       Conduct program evaluation to measure program effectiveness

7.       When feasible submit funding applications for school garden education grants

8.       Write articles for local or school newsletters when applicable

9.       Occasionally assist with other related activities of the obesity prevention program on an as needed basis

10.    Serves as a positive role model for students by consistently maintaining a positive and helpful attitude with students, teachers and co-workers

11.    Responds to feedback or concerns in a tactful and professional manner and refers to Program Manager accordingly

12.    Maintains a safe environment for all students, paying careful attention to the needs of students by understanding and complying with all established emergency and safety guidelines and practices

13.    Abides by and reports any major safety issues to Program Manager or school personnel

14.    Abides by each school’s safety procedures

15.    Maintains a positive, cheerful disposition that generates an enthusiastic atmosphere (e.g. greets students, teachers and parents, smiles, maintains eye-contact, verbally reinforces student participation).

16.    Supports BCHD’s vision and mission for individual health and wellbeing by demonstrating healthy behaviors that serve as a role model for participants and staff 

17.    Adheres to District and departmental policies and procedures

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDELINES

Any combination equivalent to experience, education, and training that would provide the required knowledge; skills and abilities would be qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skill and abilities would be:

 

Education/Training:

4-year degree in horticulture or related field is preferred. 

 

Experience:

Requires one year of experience in developing school and/or community gardens. Experience in leading children and adults through garden education lessons and activities. Experience in leading successful trainings.

 

Special Requirements:

First Aid, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillator methods; appropriate safety precautions and procedures; simple record keeping procedures. Must have a valid Class C California driver’s license and the ability to maintain insurability under the City’s Vehicle Insurance Policy. Successfully pass background security check.

 

Knowledge:

Must have excellent customer service skills with a polished and professional demeanor and exhibit good judgment and people skills.  Experience in general office practices and procedures with good written communication skills. Advanced skills in a variety of basic office duties. Familiarity with the operation of standard office equipment and Internet research.  Effective organization of work and prioritization of activities to meet deadlines and ability to work accurately and independently. Professional communication with both internal and external customers.  Word processing at a speed of not less than 50 wpm.  Proficient with the computer, Microsoft office programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.

 

Skills/Abilities:

Ability to effectively communicate instructions, maintain a positive attitude and generate enthusiasm at all times.  Must demonstrate ability to relay instructions and tailor activities to match program and school needs.  Requires excellent communication and organizational skills.

Physical Sensors:

While performing duties of this job, the employee is required to continuously engage in a series of physical activities needed to effectively implement gardens. This includes, but is not limited to a combination of sitting, bending, kneeling, stooping, grasping, reaching, lifting, walking and standing. Must be able to perform visual assessment of participants and their surrounding area 100% of time.

 

Environmental Elements:

Employee works in an outdoor environment and normal office environment.
