What is Permaculture?

Permaculture is an holistic approach to land use design, based on ecological
principles and patterns. Permaculture aims to create stable, productive
systems that provide for human needs, harmoniously integrating the land with
people. The ecological processes of plants, animals, water, weather and
nutrient cycles are integrated with the human needs and technologies for
food, energy, shelter and infrastructure. Elements in a system are viewed in
relationship with other elements, and the outputs of one element become the
inputs of another.

Within a Permaculture system, work is minimised, "wastes" become resources,
productivity and yields increase, and the environment is restored.

Permaculture principles can be applied to any environment, at any scale -
from dense urban settlements to individual homes, from farms to entire
regions.

Who would benefit from a Permaculture Design Course ?

Since the first Permaculture Design Course was offered in 1972, people from
widely diverse backgrounds and interests have graduated. Farmers, ranchers,
landowners, foresters, landscape designers, architects, builders, planners,
developers, accountants, financiers, bankers, publishers, attorneys, aid
workers, educators, environmentalists and students have all brought
Permaculture techniques into their homes, businesses and communities.

This course is for anyone interested in gaining practical skills and
perspective for sustainable living and productivity.

During this two week residential course, you will gain an understanding of
Permaculture theory, building your knowledge of all the necessary aspects to
become fully conversant with Permaculture design. By the end of the course,
you will be able to confidently create your first Permaculture design plan.

About the Instructors

The primary lecturers are Bill Mollison, Lisa Mollison and Darren Doherty.
During the Course other speakers who have specialised in areas relevant to
the Course will be invited to lecture.

Bill Mollison

Founder and director of the Permaculture Institute, Bill is the most
experienced Permaculture teacher and designer today. He has taught and
developed projects from the Arctic through Sub-tropics and Equatorial
regions of the planet. There are few countries left in the world where he
has not personally planted the seeds of Permaculture. The Peoples of the
Pacific, south East Asia, South Africa and seven Amazonian language groups
have been inspired by and acted on his teachings, embracing Permaculture as
a dynamic tool. He has also given Courses in the drylands and developed
projects with Native Americans, Australian Aboriginals, tribal women of the
Deccan, Kalahari, San groups and Pima people of the Sonora. In the USA,
Europe and Scandinavia, Bill has lectured and helped to develop ecological
designs for urban and rural properties, including many city-farms and CSA s
(Community Supported Agriculture).

Bill Mollison has been vitally concerned with the environment for over 40
years. His many roles included: scientist, naturalist and University
professor. Later he became a vigorous campaigner against environmental
exploitation which lead him to develop Permaculture as a positive solution.
Since then, Bill has devoted his energies towards designing sustainable
systems, writing books and articles on Permaculture, and most importantly
teaching.

Permaculture now laps the globe, resulting in hundreds of independent
associations involved in the areas of sustainable agriculture,
reforestation, education and village economics. His enduring commitment and
endless enthusiasm continues as the span and scope of Permaculture broadens.
True to his vision, throughout the world, Permaculture is becoming an
everyday part of life.

Lisa Mollison

Lisa is co-director of the Permaculture Institute and Tagari Publications.
Lisa was raised on a California rice farm owned by her family for four
generations. She worked over a decade in commercial agriculture and learned
first hand the destructive legacy of chemical farming. In 1992, Lisa set out
to promote sustainable agriculture on a personal scale and founded the
business, Foodscapes organic. During five years of operation, Foodscapes
installed over 300 home gardens and back-yard mini-farms. She is experienced
in business management, surveying and excavation, soil analysis, broad scale
small grain production and landscape contracting.

Darren Doherty

Darren J. Doherty is a fifth-generation Bendigonean (from Bendigo, in
rural Victoria, Australia) committed to Permaculture based sustainable
development. Growing up on the land, becoming a Chef, then an Organic
Produce Retailer and Certified Organic Market Gardener has provided Darren
with a framework of uniquely combined experience as a new generation
Permaculture Consultant. At the age of 25, in 1993, Darren operated
Permaculture Design Services Bendigo, and then in 1997 initialised Australia
Felix Permaculture. He has been involved in the design and development of
over 700 rural Australian properties, particularly in cool temperate,
Mediterranean and semi-arid climate zones. Continually networking and
educating himself, Darren is respected in Australia as one of the most
experienced broadacre Permaculture Farm Planners / Developers. Darren
completed his original PDC at Candelo in 1993, followed by another with Bill
Mollison in 1995., Darren also received his Diploma of Permaculture Design
in 1995, as well as with the Whole Farm Planning Certificate from the
University of Melbourne. Darren has particularly strong links with the Farm
Forestry and Olive industries, and was the inaugural Chairman of the Box
Ironbark Farm Forestry Network. Darren and his family have also developed
their own award-winning urban and broadacre demonstration and research
sites.

Course Location

The Course will be held at Araluen Holiday Camp which is located in
North-west Tasmania, Australia, near Bass Strait. The camp is 2km from Rocky
Cape National Park, with beaches and walking tracks, 32 km from Wynyard and
the Burnie airport, and 27km from Stanley.

Accommodation is on-site, either dormitory type: 8 to a room, or
self-contained units: 2 to a room, and 4 rooms to a unit. Bring your own
towels, sheets, blankets or sleeping bags.

Alternative accommodation is available if you prefer to make your own
arrangements.

Tuition & Fees

This 72-hour Course consists of lectures, demonstration and hands-on
experience. Daily time-table is from 9.00 am to 5.30 p.m., with two ½ hour
tea breaks, and a 2 hour lunch break.

Videos, slides and guest speakers will be available on certain evenings.

Residential (including all meals) $ 1,395.00 All costs are in Australian
dollars

Non-residential (including lunch & tea) $ 1,115.00

Come Prepared

Bring notebook, pens, pencils, coloured markers, ruler and tracing paper.
Please bring any slides, photographs or resource materials you feel may be
relevant to the Course.

You will also need boots, outdoor clothing, hat sun-screen and rain gear.

We offer one scholarship per 20 registered students. To be considered for a
Scholarship, you would need to demonstrate an ability to spread Permaculture
strategies throughout your community. If you wish to apply for a
Scholarship, please tell us in nor more than 500 words, how you already work
with your community.

Music

Music making is a highlight of most evenings. Please bring your instruments.
