Adapt- and Advance

Larry Santoyo likes to tell his students at the beginning of a permaculture course, "Remember the two Ads- Adapt and Advance". It's a crucial principle to integrate as a design strategy for life: all organisms respond to changing conditions by adapting so that they may continue to survive and advance.

One of the ways we are adapting here is to transition from the occasional newsletter, hosted by an outside service reaching a few thousand of you, to a more frequent blog on earthflow.com that can reach many more of you- and where you can respond to us and each other on the various topics.

So we're ending this newsletter format and encouraging you to visit us more frequently on our own site: Receive blog updates

We're also adapting to changes in our personal lives as well, with our base of operations moving to Los Angeles fulltime while an outpost remains up on The Ranch (with occasional opportunities to come up for hands-on workparties). You'll hear about each of those worlds on the blog, as well as news and opinions on what's happening in the world at large.

For now, we leave you with some reminders of upcoming courses in LA and San Luis Obispo, as well as a workshop by Larry Santoyo at Bioneers, a new book coming out that includes a special essay by Larry and, our new affiliate program that rewards you for helping to spread the word about our educational opportunities.

It's not goodbye, now- but adios, adapt and advance!

Permaculture- in the City

LA Permaculture Design Course and the Back to the City MovementOctober 2 marks the start of our 10th production of the Los Angeles Permaculture Design Course . For years we've been offering the 72 hour Certificate Course in LA as a weekend series, pioneering the format of a class lasting 6 months which enabled the design teams to experience their permaculture projects as real community development programs.

We've been honored and proud to be part of the reason these design projects have come to life and look forward to their continuing evolution.

*If you've been thinking about joining the class, note that Early Registration Discount ends Monday, September 6. Sign up by then and save $150 off the regular tuition!

*Register together with a friend and save an additional 10%.

*Already a PDC graduate? Take the course again as a refresher for 50% off!

Four Elements Permaculture Design Course
 In addition to ou
r 6 weekend/ 6 month course starting in October in LA, we are offering once again our Intensive Permaculture Design Course at Four Elements Farm in San Luis Obispo, October 17-30.

Consider it a learning vacation: two weeks of "Hands-On Living and Learning" Permaculture on a 40+acre organic farm in the coastal foothills of SLO county- camping under the clear starry skies of our central coast autumn while you immerse yourself in permaculture design. .

There's still time to take advantage of our Early Registration Discount but you need to act by September 16.

Of course, we continue to offer our Friends Discount, so when you sign up with at least one other person online, you all automatically receive 10% off your tuition. It's our way of encouraging existing social networks to adopt permaculture design as a guiding influence.

Permaculture- For Humanity

Bioneers

Mark your calendar for the annual Bioneers Conference  and its Oct. 16 session "Permaculture for Humanity" with Larry Santoyo and Louie Hena, hosted by Bioneers Food and Farming Director Arty Mangan:
"As the world moves rapidly toward peak oil, peak water and the exhaustion of many natural resources, we need to go beyond ideology to eco-practicality in all aspects of life. One of the best places to garner guidance is from traditional indigenous land use practices - the foundation of permaculture principles."
