Birds, Bees, Bread and Cheese

Quail Springs Permaculture invites you to weekend food production intensives focused on growing and processing your own food! From understanding and engaging in the animal husbandry involved with backyard poultry and butchering, to calling in a wild yeast, baking sourdough bread in the earthen ovens, keeping bees, and making cheeses, well honor, celebrate, and participate in the daily miracle of food, and what it takes to bring it to the table.

Session 1 will cover an introduction to dairy goats, milking, and basic cheese making, keeping bees with the top bar hive method, backyard poultry for meat and eggs, as well as butchering. We will make artisan sourdough bread, and learn the basics of earthen oven cooking. The weekend is full, hands on, and we get going at5:30 in the morning on Saturday, and 6am on Sunday.

The classes will be small in order to have plenty of hands-on time for all participants, so please register early to hold your spot.

BrentonKelly has over 25 years experience in soil building, gardening, non-toxic land management and animal husbandry. He co-owned Island Seed and Feed in Goleta for 10 years before joining the Quail Springs team, and has taught many people about pastured poultry, bees, worms, vegetables, and more.

Jan Smith has been a professional cook for over 30 years, and for the last 10 years shes focused on growing the food she cooks. With that as a guide shes worked in and then managed an organic orchard, a farm, a nursery, and the small teaching creamery at Quail Springs. Jan has helped many people set up home gardens, and shared her love of cooking and animal husbandry with visitors to Quail Springs.

Website Programmer for Quail Springs Permaculture

We are currently looking for a programmer to assist in the development of the Quail Springs Permaculture website in exchange for course credit. We are looking to progress the functionality and design of the site. The site is Wordpress based so experience with Wordpress is preferable. The work would include simple coding and other alterations to the website. You would work closely with the marketing team and could potentially be long distance.
