Permaculture News from Permaculture Course in Louisiana with Bill Mollison
Just returned from a 3 Day Permaculture Course in Louisiana with Bill Mollison one of the founders of Permaculture. At the Course a group of Macedonian made a presentation at the course with Australian Permaculture Teacher and Designer Geoff Lawton who had done the permaculture design for the Refugee Camp Restoration Cegrane refugee camp in Macedonia. Please read below from the webpage http://www.rudina.org.mk/english.htm and hear there words of the Macedonian and how they have inter grated permaculture into their community as a result of Geoff help in the project. The idea is to present a new model of land restoration and community help in areas that suffer war and other human problems. The North West Louisiana Commerce Center in Minden Louisiana www.nwlcc.com where the course took place is an 15,000 acre defense base once had arms manufacturing which is being converted to an Eco-industrial Park, and a Permaculture design and teaching facility. And a place for humans around the world to come and get Permaculture training so they can repair the earth and rebuild their communities after natural and man made disasters like war . Training to put people on the ground all over the world with knowledge and training before disaster hit.

News from Villa Esperanza Gardens at Juvenile Hall Santa Barbara, Ca needs help and plants
Members of our Guild have been busy volunteering time every wednesday 10:30-12:30pm for over 3 years slowly building up the garden with the teenagers and creating a wonderful solitude with fruit trees vines flowers and annuals. We move with the teenagers their moods and desires so the garden develops with their energy and pace. Because of the discipline system we sometimes have some of the teenagers for as little as one month, and a constant flow of new teenagers ever month. We have put in rock gardens , banana circle, swales and finally this year a system of swales, rock boomerangs and earthworks that has finally stop the heavy erosion by flooding in the garden. We always could us more volunteers to help as the two original founders Jill Cloutier and Kim Redmond are taking a well deserved rest. Oscar Carmona has joined to help each week with Wes Roe.
We could use surplus plants, fruit trees, bananas, ornamentals, bulbs, herbs tools or any donations to help the garden.

Announcing the Opening of The Permaculture Credit Union
T
he Permaculture Credit Union is a reality. A new kind of environmentally responsive financial institution has been created and chartered. It is possibly the first credit union founded upon the Earth Care principles of Permaculture ethics, namely respect for natural systems, respect for people, and no waste ( which in banking will mean the reinvestment and recycling of surplus back into the community being served). Our mission is to pool the financial resources of people who subscribe to these ethical principles and provide a financial vehicle that will allow these resources to be put to work creating a sound sustainable, environmentally responsible future. We believe we have targeted a market that is severely unserved by existing financial institutions- those people who are committed to a cleaner environment, healthy food and water, sustainable energy use, and a more conscious lifestyle. It will create the opportunity for members to control the use of money in the community and contribute to the revitalization of local well-being.

"What permaculturists are doing is the most important activity that any
group is doing on the planet. We don't know what details of a truly
sustainable future are going to be like, but we need options, we need
people experimenting in all kinds of ways and permaculturists are one of
the critical gangs that are doing that."
Dr David Suzuki geneticist, broadcaster
and international environmental advocate

Permaculture education includes principles and practices of
sustainable soil, water, crop, forest, architectural, business, and
finance systems ethical investment, community loan support and small
business management.

Permaculture, from PERMAnent agriCULTURE, is an integrated system of
design including not only agriculture, horticulture, architecture and
ecology but also land access strategies and economic systems for small
businesses and communities.

Taken from the Latin, permanens, to endure or persist through time and
cultura, cultures - permaculture is an interdisciplinary design
science focused on sustainable system design. Sustainable systems are
defined as those that, over their lifetime, produce energy equivalent
to or in excess of what they consume.

Permaculture operates on three ethics: care of the earth, care of the
species and return of excess to the first two.
