"Earth, Spirit, Action "
                                                            with
John Seed
Monday, May 1, 2006, 7:00 pm
Santa Barbara Public Library, Faulkner Gallery

Global warming, endless warfare, pollution and mass extinction. How do we live in such a time? How do we find vision and empowerment to act as agents of healing change?

Join renowned global environmentalist John Seed, founder of the Rainforest Information Center (Lismore, Australia) (www.rainforestinfo.org.au)  and co-author of Thinking Like a Mountain - Towards a Council of All Beings, as he talks (with Poetry, Film and  Music.) on "Earth,  Action, Spirit"   John will explore the philosophy of deep ecology and the psychological tools that allow us to be engaged and effective at such a time while avoiding depression , burnout and futility.

Seed will use music, poetry, film and the spoken word to share the philosophy of deep ecology and present information on conservation projects he is presently advancing, including eco-forestry with native peoples in Papua New Guinea, afforestation of the holy mountain Arunachala in Tamil Nadu (India), and efforts in Maharashtra (India) to support the Katkari
tribal group, whose culture is at the brink of extinction as they are forced to work as bonded labor at brick kilns and live in abject poverty.

This is a rare opportunity to hear one of the seminal thinkers of deep ecology, an activist who has been at the forefront of the movement to unite and reorient the hearts of humanity toward a sustainable and just way of life over the past 25 years.

In Seed's own words: In 1979 after the first direct actions which eventually led to the protection of Australia's rainforests, I founded the Rainforest Information Centre and since that time I've been working on the conservation of the world's rainforests. It soon became clear that the forests could not be saved one at a time nor the planet saved one issue at a time. Unless we simultaneously address the underlying psychological or spiritual disease that allows modern humans to feel separate from nature, the destruction of species and life-support systems will continue.

John Seed is founder and director of the Rainforest Information Center in Australia. Since 1979 he has been involved in the direct actions which have resulted in the protection of the Australian rainforests. In 1984 he helped initiate the US Rainforest Action Network which grew out of the first his many US road shows. In 1987 he co-produced a television documentary for Australian national television about the struggle for the rainforests. This has since been shown in many countries. A front page story about John's work in the Christian Science Monitor at this time referred to him as "the town crier for the global village".

The evening talk takes place at the Santa Barbara Public Library, Faulkner Gallery, 40 East Anapamu St, in downtown Santa Barbara, on Monday, May 1, 7:00-9:30 pm.   Donation $5-$10.
