About the homes on the tour:

Straw-bale:
Straw bales were used to construct the walls of one home on the tour.  The bales were then covered by stucco and plaster.  Straw is an abundant agricultural waste product, and requires little energy to bale and transport for construction.  For these reasons, straw-bale construction is gaining popularity as part of passive solar and other renewable energy projects.  This home features a truth window that reveals the straw within the walls.  Contemporary furnishings and art mingle easily with Balinese architect details and artifacts in this unique and inspiring home.

Craftsman:  Two homes on the Tour are sensitive remodels using craftsman design. This style incorporates handcrafted wood, glass, and metal work which are both simple and elegant.  Each home showcases clean lines, sturdy structure, natural, reclaimed and environmentally friendly materials.  Tour patrons can learn from the owners how they acquired the innovative and cutting-edge materials used in construction.   The landscapes of each home have also been designed with sustainability in mind.

Historic:  Once owned by the well-known Montecitan, Dr. Charles Park.  This home and lush garden has been extensively renovated with respect for its original Arts and Crafts design, enhancing the aesthetics, proportions, and quiet elegance lost over decades of wear and alterations.  The outcome of this remodel is a happy one - the rejuvenation of a neglected historic home and the return of the beauty and quality it had lost over the years.

Italian Villa:  Incorporating green building practices into this lovely Tuscan style remodel added living space to the original 1950 s home, improved its overall energy efficiency and indoor air quality, enhanced the landscape with native and edible vegetation, significantly integrated outdoor living spaces, while taking advantage of magnificent mountain and ocean views.

Contemporary (only available for VIP Tour patrons):  The design concept for this award-winning home incorporates large, energy efficient windows showcasing commanding 1800 views and make strong connections between indoor and outdoor environments. The home fits beautifully into the natural characteristics of the site and uses passive solar features for heating and cooling.  These features include large roof overhangs over south facing windows designed to provide shade from the hot summer sun but allow warm winter sunlight in to help heat the thermal mass of the exposed concrete floors throughout the house.

Habitat for Humanity:  Composed of simple three-bedroom, two-bath units this multi-family project is designed to harmonize with the neighborhood, and will include a play area for the homeowners' children.  The project is being constructed with volunteer labor and donated, recycled and/or purchased materials.  The homes will feature highly efficient mechanical and plumbing systems, high performance dual glazed windows and insulation, natural or passive heating and cooling, use of certified sustainably-harvested lumber and forest products (when possible), engineered timbers, joists and roof trusses and low off-gassing, healthy materials.
