The Santa Barbara Permaculture Network, Santa Barbara City College and the SBCC Center of Sustainability will be screening the film "Last Paradise" on Thursday, Oct 20th (see below for more info), so the Permaculture Guild of Santa Barbara is canceling our Oct 20 meeting so as not to conflict. We will reschedule our "Patio Permaculture" event for Wed Nov 17th.

Our childhood playgrounds shape our dreams
Our dreams shape our lives.
Our lives shape the playgrounds for tomorrow's children.
And so the fate of the wilderness is bound in this spiral.

A story of adventure and change, filmed over 45 years,
so we might relive the journey today---and better see our tracks.

Hi everyone,

Once again Santa Barbara Permaculture Network is co-sponsoring an event with Santa Barbara City College (SBCC), and the SBCC Center for Sustainability.  We began in 2005 when we brought Permaculture co-founder, David Holmgren to Santa Barbara, and asked the SBCC Environmental Horticultural department if they would like to be co-sponsors, and have followed with many events and permaculture related speakers and programs since then, because we saw the value of community colleges and their ability to disseminate knowledge to a wide audience, in the most egalitarian way.

Most recently, we helped develop and sponsor with the SBCC Center for Sustainability, From Green Jobs, to Building the Blue Economy, with Gunter Pauli, a 3 day event in April 2010, that resulted in an Eco-entrepreneurship pilot program currently being developed at SBCC.

That event encouraged us to recently attend the World Congress on Zero Emissions Initiatives in Hawaii.  Gunter Pauli recognized us personally and SBCC Blue Economy event several times.  We talked about the Eco-entrepreneurship pilot program a lot, great interest in this unique model.  As a result, we will have lots of assistance from many helpful people, many international speakers now coming our way, including His Excellency, The Honorable Minister of Education, Lyonpo Thakur S. Powdyel from the Royal Government of Bhutan. We made strong connection with this wonderful person who represents the only country that has GNH (Gross National Happiness) as a goal for all its people (and the only country in the world committed to a negative net carbon sink). Go to www.zeroemissionshawaii.org to read more about the conference and his keynote address, and the final concluding Aloha Accord. (many permaculture connected concepts, ideas and participants at the conference)

Please join us for The Last Paradise Film event on Wed, Oct 20! (see below) It is a fundraiser for the SBCC Center for Sustainability, and we hope you will come out in large numbers, bring family and friends, help us fill the Arlington Theater. Buy tickets for family and friends, maybe even sponsor some scholarship tickets. It is a good way to show the college the community supports the Center, and besides, it's a beautiful film, that reaches a college age audience (important!) as well as the rest of us.

hope to see you there-

On Wednesday, Oct 20 from 7 pm - 8:45 pm, the Permaculture Guild of Santa Barbara will present a free class, "Patio Permaculture: Growing Food on your Balcony, Porch or Patio" at the South Coast Watershed Resource Center at Arroyo Burro/Hendry's Beach, 2981 Cliff Drive in Santa Barbara. We'll show a brief video by permaculture co-founder Bill Mollison on how to grow food in small spaces, plus we'll have a discussion where we share ideas and experience about what grows best in small spaces here in Santa Barbara.  We'll pay special attention to how to use vertical space, trellises, bamboo teepees etc.
