What is the Lexicon of Sustainability...

A unique pop-up art show of visually packed collages, making a tour across the country with local curators.  Created by author, film maker and photographer Douglas Gayeton, who for the past three years conversed with the foremost practitioners of sustainability in food and farming. They shared their insights and experiences and contributed their words to our rapidly growing Lexicon of Sustainability. The Lexicon project has also grown to include short films, study guides, traveling shows, a book and a website where people can add their own terms to this ever-evolving lexicon.

Gayeton felt if he could define and build out the language of sustainability, he could give people the tools they needed to bounce around real ideas. To make a change. Gayeton identified 100 key terms and began visiting the farmers, fishermen, foragers, and chefs across the country who could help him define them. By illuminating the vocabulary of sustainable agriculture and the conversation about America’s rapidly evolving food culture, the Lexicon project gives people the tools and knowledge necessary to create a healthier, safer food system in America.

WE WILL BRING the Lexicon of Sustainability Exhibit back again for the SPRING SEMESTER, encouraging faculty to involve students and incorporate into their curriculums in some way.  We hope to develop local Lexicon content, and will encourage students in many departments and student clubs to get involved.
