Learn how the White House honored Veterans Sustainable Agriculture Training (VSAT) program, an agricultural entrepreneurial incubator in Escondido, is taking students from seed-to-market.
Farming and food businesses can be both therapeutic and a way to employ the leadership skills of returning vets with skills that might otherwise not translate well into other jobs.
The program has graduated over 270 veterans since 2007, the majority of whom own or manage a farm today.
Erik Boyd is a VSAT Graduate and has his degree in Soil Science. Erik served in the Army and had two 12 month deployments: His first in Iraq he was awarded a Purple Heart, then Erik was deployed again to Afghanistan.
Erik comes from a background of agriculture and has a family farm in San Luis Obispo. Erik returned to go to Cal Poly SLO and achieved his degree soil science, shortly after that Erik came though VSAT, through his VSAT certificate Erik was able to borrow money to build a greenhouse from Farm Service Agency.
Today, Erik sells to nearby stores and every 8 weeks comes to Archi's Acres to teach soils.
