***  Cal Poly Permaculture  Hosts Autumn Harvest Oct. 9-10  ***

(Here is some info from a recent press release. I highly recomend the
Friday evening, Oct.9 presentation by Michael Ableman at Cal Poly's
Chumash auditorium. His slide shows are beautiful and inspiring shots of
community agriculture here in California and around the world. It
will also be a good time to meet with others interested in ecological
approaches to food and design.

Saturday Oct. 10 will be a fun day and I'm hoping people will be bring
lots of home-grown produce for the taste contests. Please spread the
word about these events, as there is minimal budget for advertising.

SAN LUIS OBISPO - Presentations, taste contests, music and dancing are
all planned as part of an Autumn Harvest Festival set at  Cal Poly and
at the San Luis Obispo Botanical Garden on Friday and Saturday, Oct.
9-10.

The festival, sponsored by Cal Poly Permaculture, a College of
Agriculture group dedicated to ecological agriculture, and the San
Luis Obispo Botanical Garden Society, is free and open to the public. 
It kicks off with a talk and slide presentation by Michael Ableman, a
Santa Barbara-based organic farmer and nationally recognized author. 

It kicks off in Chumash Auditorium at 7 p.m. Friday with a talk and
slide presentation by Ableman, author of "From the Good Earth", and the
new "On Good Land", and guest appearances by Cal Poly Permaculture
instructor Larry Santoyo and Central Coast agricultural leaders.
 
The festival continues at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the San Luis Obispo
Botanical Garden at El Chorro Regional Park across from Cuesta College
on Highway 1, where  events continue to 3pm.
 
At 1:30pm at the Cal Poly Permaculture Center and organic Student
Experimental Farm, the monthly gathering of the Central Coast California
Rare Fruit Growers community group begins, and visitors are encouraged
to
participate.  The day will also include presentations on ecological
agriculture, seed saving, tours
of special plantings, and taste tests.  There will be gourmet organic
dinners
available for purchase (please call to reserve at $7/person), a plant
raffle,
and a bonfire music celebration at dusk.

Directions to the center are: From Highway 1, enter the campus on
Highland Road. At the first stop sign, take a left on to Mt. Bishop
Road.  Go 1/4 mile and turn right into the Cal Poly Dairy and go all the
way through the parking lot  and turn right at the sign which says
"Student Experimental Farm" onto the dirt road. Follow it to the left
and proceed uphill, The Permaculture Center is on the right hand side.

The largest garden  food tasting event in San Luis Obispo
County, the contest invites both home gardeners and professional growers
to participate.  Anyone interested in entering his or her homegrown
