Oak Regeneration and Restoration in Santa Barbara County: 
A lecture, workshop, and field trip 

Valley Oak in Santa Barbara County: its status and distribution 
Thursday, November 16, 7 p.m., St. Marks-in-the-Valley Episcopal Church, Los
Olivos 

Frank Davis, UCSB Professor in the School of Environmental Science and 
Management, will present his research findings about the long-term trends in 
valley oak populations in the Santa Ynez and Los Alamos valleys. A short
update
on sudden oak death (SOD), which is affecting coast live oak,  tanbark oak,
and
black oak in Northern and Central California, will follow  Dr. Davis'
presentation. 

Techniques for Growing Oaks from Acorns 
Saturday, November 18, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Rain date, Dec. 2. UC Sedgwick Reserve
(For directions, call numbers below.) 

Workshop leaders are Douglas McCreary, Natural Resources Specialist with UC's
Integrated Hardwood Range Management Program, and Claudia Tyler, manager of
the
Santa Barbara County Oak Restoration Program. We will plant acorns at a
restoration site at Sedgwick Reserve using several different planting methods
and tour the oak regeneration studies being conducted there. We conclude
with a
visit to Las Cruzitas Ranch to observe its valley oak restoration project.
