PERVIOUS CONCRETE PAVING: A WORKSHOP FOR PROFESSIONALS

Imagine what you could do with a paving material that soaks up runoff and
pollution like a sponge, supports the weight of traffic, looks great and is
easy and economical to install.

Pervious concrete is a watershed-friendly paving material that has been
used in Europe for over 50 years and in the Southern United States for over
30 years, but is new to California.

Pervious concrete has a 15-25% void space, which allows water to soak in
rather than run off into waterways, and it traps pollutants for
bioremediation in the soil. It is widely used for parking lots, driveways,
roadways and other applications in environmentally sensitive areas. In
December 2001, California's first pervious concrete parking lot was
installed in Fair Oaks, a suburb of Sacramento.

Be among the first in the tri-counties to learn about pervious concrete in
this short workshop that will be of interest to architects, landscape
architects, contractors, planners, civil engineers, transportation and
public works officials and others in the building and public infrastructure
fields.

Co-sponsored by the California Cement Promotion Council and County
Landscape & Design of Santa Barbara, and hosted by the City of Santa
Barbara, this free seminar will introduce you to the concept of pervious
concrete paving, show you a video of a typical installation, discuss
potential applications, and give you a background in specifying, designing
and managing pervious concrete paving.

"We can make a little order where we are, and then the
big sweep of history on which we can have no effect
doesn't overwhelm us. We do it with colors, with a garden,
with the furnishings of a room, or with sounds and words.
We make a little form, and we gain composure."
