Today many people are looking for ways to bring
more community into their lives. Ordinary people
with extraordinary visions tell their stories of
living and working together to build a better world.

Ever since the 6th Century BC--when Buddha
instructed his followers to live in community--
people have been living together "intentionally"
based on shared visions of a better world.
In the ensuing 2500 years there have been
an amazing array of visionary social experiments:
egalitarians, anarchists, Christians, Quakers,
Eastern spiritual groups, back-to-the-landers,
environmentalists, psychologists, artists,
urban homesteaders, land co-ops, student
co-ops, and much more.

Today there exist thousands of these
visionary groups, living their everyday lives
in ways that reflect their values and visions.
Geoph's multimedia presentation will feature
an overview of the wide range of histories,
philosophies, and lifestyles currently available
in shared living communities-including footage
from his newly released video documentary
"Visions of Utopia." An open discussion will follow.

Geoph has lived in communities of one kind or another for
30 years.  He has been on the road for 15 years visiting
communities of all stripes--over 350 so far--getting
involved in the daily routine of each group, asking about
their visions and realities, taking photos and video clips, and
giving talks about the diversity and vitality of the communities
movement.  He is a featured columnist for "Communities Magazine,"
and is a co-creator of the Communities Directory ("the Bible of
the communities movement").

OTHER NEWS FROM L.A. ECO-VILLAGE:  THE STRUGGLE TO SAVE THE CORNER
Lois has relocated from the LAUSD owned corner four-plex to the large yellow
building owned by CRSP across the street.  LAUSD officials state that they do
not yet know what they will do with the corner (where the birth of Eco-Village
took place starting in 1993), a corner that has been saved from LAUSD 
bulldozers
three times in the past 12 years.  We would like to permanently remove the 
corner
from this risk by acquiring it from the school district for a visionary 
school use!

We have submitted a draft proposal to our school board member Jose Huizar to
eco-retrofit the four-plex for a small public charter school.  The Ecovillage
Neighborhood Learning Center charter would serve up to 40 children within 
walking
distance in grades 3-5.  These children would become expert in place based 
education
and provide interactive place-based and urban infrastructure tours to the 
approximately
5,000 additional children in the 15 public schools within walking distance 
of L.A. Eco-Village.

Through working with other close-by schools--children, teachers, staff,
parents--there is the potential to grow an eco section of our city!

Jose Huizar needs to hear from as many people as possible who know that 
this vision
of place based integrated learning can be ideally manifested in LAEV in the 
corner

If you would like to be involved in the design and development of this 
visionary
charter concept, please contact Lois at 213/738-1254 or <crsp at igc.org>.  We 
are looking
for two experienced environmental teachers of passion and hope (bi-lingual 
in Spanish)
who will work with us on manifesting this vision.  We will be submitting 
our final proposal
to the California Department of Education for a planning grant early next year.
