The "Hand-Sculpted House Tour"

Ianto Evans and Linda Smiley, directors of Cob Cottage Company in Oregon, are
coming to the South Coast for a special lecture, slide show, and
book-signing. They will introduce cob and natural buildings from around the
world. Ianto and Linda’s new book, The Hand-Sculpted House: A Practical and
Philosophical Guide to Building a Cob Cottage, illustrates the ways that cob
buildings use hands and feet to form lumps of earth mixed with sand and
straw, creating a sensory and aesthetic experience similar to clay sculpting.

A lecture & slide show will be held on Friday Nov 15, 6:30pm at Great Pacific
Iron Works® (Patagonia® store) in Ventura, 235 W. Santa Clara St. - at Olive
St. Books will be available for signing by the author. Please call Santa
Barbara Permaculture Network at 805/962-2571 for more information, or email
sbpcnet at silcom.com. Visit the Cob Cottage website for details on the book at

The book and slide show answer the question, What is a cob building? Discover
the possibilities of working in balance with the earth, from beautiful
ancient ten-story earthen buildings to small modern cottages. Thousands of
comfortable and picturesque cob houses in the British Isles have been
continually occupied for centuries, and are still in highly valued. Cob is
easy to learn and inexpensive to build. Its viability has been thoroughly
proven all over the world for centuries. During the past ten years, The Cob
Cottage Company has trained more than a thousand students.

Ianto Evans is an applied ecologist, landscape architect, inventor, writer
and teacher He has experience building earth structures on six continents.
Cob is a traditional construction technique in his homeland Wales. He has
consulted on ecological building worldwide, including indigenous peoples, US
AID, World Bank, and Peace Corps. Linda Smiley is a master cobber and
recreational therapist. She teaches workshops in cob, sculpting sacred
spaces, intuitive design, and natural plasters and finishes.
