JEFFREY SMITH, AUTHOR OF SEEDS OF BESTSELLER SEEDS OF DECEPTION, TO SPEAK IN
SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY

Jeffrey Smith will talk about Measure Q, genetically engineered crops and
how they could impact SLO County

(San Luis Obispo)—Jeffrey Smith, author of international bestseller Seeds of
Deception, will stop in San Luis Obispo September 7-9 on a tour of
California counties attempting to prohibit the growing of genetically
engineered (GE) crops. He will make two public appearances in San Luis
Obispo County. The public is invited free of charge to attend these events
and learn more about GE crops and Measure Q.

Tuesday, September 7th, Jeffrey will appear at the Grover Beach Community
Center, 1230 Trouville Ave., at 7:30 pm.

Wednesday, September 8th, he will speak at the Ludwig Center in San Luis
Obispo at 7pm, 864 Santa Rosa St.

After each appearance, Mr. Smith will be available for questions and book
signings.
San Luis Obispo Co. faces an important decision in November with Measure Q,
an initiative to prohibit the growing of GE crops in unincorporated areas of
the county. The initiative will not prohibit university or private research
but will instead give SLO voters the opportunity to tell local growers that
they, like people across the country and around the world, do not want to
eat genetically engineered crops.

Jeffrey Smith has traveled in five continents and more than 50 countries.
He has electrified world leaders and the public on the documented risks of
genetically engineered crops and the controversies surrounding their
approval. Audiences are both shocked and grateful to know the truth about
the foods they eat everyday.

Seeds of Deception has been called the Silent Spring of genetically
engineered foods. Just as Silent Spring led to a ban of DDT, Seeds of
Deception may result in widespread rejection of GE crops. The book
addresses topics such as:

·	The FDA's political appointees ignored agency scientists warnings about
the dangers of GE foods, and now do not require ANY safety testing or
notification, prior to marketing.

·	Most food companies who remove GE ingredients are not motivated by food
safety, but by economics. For example, when McDonalds, Pringles, and the
other major potato buyers decided not to sell Monsanto's GE New Leaf potato
at overwhelming consumer request, it was soon taken off the market.

·	Scientists who tried to expose the dangers of GE were offered bribes or
threatened. Evidence was stolen. Data was omitted or distorted.

·	Government employees who complained were harassed, stripped of
responsibilities, or fired.

·	Laboratory rats fed a GE crop developed stomach lesions and seven of the
forty died within two weeks. The crop was approved without further tests.

·	When a top scientist tried to alert the public about his alarming
discoveries, he lost his job and was silenced with threats of a lawsuit.

Genetic engineering usually involves taking genes from one species and
inserting them into another in an attempt to transfer a desired trait or
character. An example would be selecting a gene that leads to the production
of a chemical with antifreeze properties from an arctic fish, and splicing
it into a potato or tomato in an attempt to make it frost-resistant.
Genetic engineering refers to a new set of molecular techniques that have
only really been developed over the last 20 or 30 years. (The first ever
field-testing of a genetically engineered plant was in 1983).
