Nov 7 - 16th. KCSB 91.9 FM, 2005 Annual Membership Drive
We got to thinking about it, and we thought the Annual KCSB Fund Drive
deserved
an extra plug. It is a community treasure, we're not sure everyone knows the
true value and scope of what they do. We all have our favorite radio
stations,
listen in for a variety of reasons, but would like to remind you of what
LOCAL
media can be and do for your community & local organizations.

KCSB allows anyone, with the training they provide, to develop and produce a
show. Anyone. They train more than 150 people, students and non-students
alike
in radio broadcasting with programs from news to music to sports to arts
programs, people that can then create their own radio programs. This year
they
hosted the Grassroots Radio Coalition Conference with 250 participants sharing
visions of media created by and for ordinary people. Permaculture teacher &
designer James Stark of the Permaculture Institute of Northern Calif and the
Permaculture Credit Union, has worked on community development in places
around
the world, he says having your own local public radio or tv, one the most
powerful components of a strong community that is resistant to corporate
sprawl. KSCB allows community groups needing exposure for their events and
programs to write and have air their own Public Service Announcements
(PSA's).

There are lots of KCSB programs to listen to and support. We of course like
Sustainable World Radio, as they have hosted many of our permaculture &
natural
building speakers that have come through our area in the last year. Grassroots
Radio, a progressive public affairs program focusing on social, economic &
environmental justice is also a favorite. But take a look at the KCSB program
schedule! An amazing diversity of topics, for instance; Paradigm Shift
(out of
the box talk show), Culture of Protest(music & commentary on social struglge,
past & present, local & global), Voice in the Heart (if you want to change the
world, tell a story, practical experience & creative inspiration), WINGS
(Women's International news gathering service, by and about women around the
world), On-Purpose Global Radio (finding your authentic life with interviews,
stories, commentary), these are just a few. Many good news programs. Music
programs include gospel, latin, blues, electronic, jazz, world music, and hip
hop, yes, lots of hip hop.

Call and ask for a program guide. During their fund drive, call and pledge
during your favorites or potential favorites. There are lot's of great
premiums available, including some permaculture and natural building books
donated by the Santa Barbara Permaculture Network, also a workshop. Your
group can also donate premiums, they are much appreciated.

Did you know local groups relying on financial support are having a very hard
time this year because recent disasters like hurricane Katrina that pulled us
to contribute that way? This always happens, but of course, it is when we
need
KCSB radio & others more than ever since they give us an alternative source to
mainstream news to understand these events. KCSB has also had major equipment
replacement costs this year, including their old STL antenna that failed
unexpectedly.

Yes, we are happy to support them.
