Hello SLO Permaculture Community,

With humanity and our planet at a crossroads and facing unprecedented ecological and social challenges, now more than ever leaders and people from all sectors – from grassroots activists, to business leaders, to government officials – are joining together to collaborate and build more thriving, resilient, and regenerative communities. Let’s do the same here!

Here is a collection of permaculture action and events to celebrate this summer & fall. Come be part of the Solution Revolution!

June 10 – Water Wise presentation at SLO Botanical Garden at 1pm – Water saving efforts like harvesting rainwater and utilizing gray water system will be discussed at Harvest and Reuse Your Water with Mladen Bandov, water resource engineer. The cost is $10, or $5 for garden members, and a free docent-led tour will follow. To find out more go to www.slobg.org

June 15 - Calling all SLO water protectors - Protect SLO Water needs you to a stand up to Big Oil and say no to sacrificing our water for toxic oil waste injection. On June 15 the San Luis Obispo Superior Court will hear a precedent-setting water case that could determine the fate of SLO County’s underground water. Enforcement of protections for our groundwater rests on this decision. Protect Price Canyon is holding a water rally at 8:00 am at the SLO Courthouse, 1035 Palm Street prior to the hearing at 9:00 a.m. They need SLO residents to WEAR BLUE and PACK THE COURTROOM. June 21 – Film on CA water politics: Biodiversity First! is bringing a National Geographic documentary to the Palm Theatre, 817 Palm Street, SLO 7:00 pm Wednesday, June 21 entitled “Water & Power: A California Heist.” The film tells the story of how a handful of water barons gained control of the state’s most precious resource, while drought left local homeowners with dry wells. A Q&A with Adam Keats, attorney with the Center for Food Safety, will be held following the film. The film is directed by Academy Award winner Alex Gibney and Emmy Award winner Marina Zenovich. This is a free event sponsored by Biodiversity First!, SLO’s newest activist environmental nonprofit organization, who speaks for those with no voice. Come and plant corn, melons and other indigenous crops for the summer season. Bring your drum for a drum circle. Our Global Family is our permaculture demo site in our area featuring Food Forest of edible plants from around the four corners of the globe.

June 24 – July 15 – Sustainable Vocations Summer Program for Youth at Quail Springs http://www.quailsprings.org/programs/program-calendar/ This interdisciplinary program for youth ages 15–19 focuses on teaching permaculture ethics and principles as they relate to ecological and social justice, community, and place-based culture.
