NEEDS AND REQUESTS

-- Dudley Triangle., Venice, CA
Haven't you ever driven by a city median strip next to the road and wanted
to plant a bunch of stuff? Doing a large one and keeping it going takes a
lot of planning. After years of wrangling permits and money, the two are
coming together to kick off our median improvement project in Venice.
The LAPG is taking over a strip of land across from the giant binoculars in
Venice near Rose and Main Streets. It is 180' long and 25' wide.
Jardiniercorp.com is stepping up to install city approved subterranean drip
irrigation which LA City was originally opposed to (only retarded sprinklers
allowed to date!). Other features of the project include gabion block (with
chain link) retaining walls/benches, guilds of plantings that we are still
selecting (mostly aromatics, herbs and decorative) and sheet mulching.
The great news is we just won a grant from the Venice Neighborhood Council
for $2500. It was the top rated project out of 40 entries. (There's a funny
photo of Ray Cirino and my new intern in this week's Argonaut accepting the
award). This will get us started and give us confidence to raise additional
funds for plantings, soil and irrigation. We hope to add interactive
components such as seating and sculpture as time goes on. This site is a
permanent high profile demonstration zone for the Los Angeles Permaculture
Guild to gather, experiment and educate. It also will empower locals to
take pride in their city and get together in community.
Workshops at the project will begin in August to be announced soon

-- Saturday July 12-13, Composting Workshop, Water Woman Gardens, Mar Vista,
CA
Why hasn't anyone really made a restroom fun and educational? How come when
there is a composting toilet made its hidden away in the woods with hardly
any details to make it last in your mind? We plan on changing all the myths
and scary things that have been attached to resting in that room. They call
it that to avoid scaring people or calling it a bathroom to avoid dealing
with that so called problem. Well now you can help yourself in learning cob
and composting in our first cob workshop here at Water Woman Gardens.
Serious attention will be put to this structure and the importance of
composting. First it will resemble a butt so it's easy to know what it is
and we all know what that does. Second it will have no smell except for
gardenia, roses, mint, or lavender that surround it. Third the hardware
details will mimic the microbs that digest the nutrients. The roof will be
able a living roof and able to catch some rainwater for the garden. Let's
make this workshop bring the right attention in a fun way to solve the
problems and myths of restrooms once and for all. Most tools are here as we
mostly use our hands. Make sure you bring a note pad, old clothes-shoes,
food for solar cooker (veggies), sense of humor and a friend. You are
invited for free after your initial class to continue the project including
plaster, living roof, fine woodworking, and composting techniques until the
butt is completed. For more information on all the things you'll be learning
check out: http://people.tribe.net/raycirino/photos 818-834-7074 RSVP by
sending check or money order to Ray Cirino
Deadline for signing up is July 10. Maximum 30 cobbers. $100 for the
weekend, kids welcome !

pets, help reduce our nation's dependence on foreign oil, address growing
concerns over global warming, and strengthen our national and economic
security. Like last year, the show will be part of an effort to promote
cleaner, more efficient alternatives to the gasoline-powered internal
