About the Organization
The Urban & Environmental Policy Institute (UEPI) is a community oriented research and advocacy organization based at Occidental College in Los Angeles, CA. UEPI serves as the umbrella for a variety of affiliated programs addressing work and industry, food and nutrition, housing, transportation, regional and community development, land use, and urban environmental issues.  UEPI functions both as an academic center with strong community ties and a community-based organization with a strong research and policy development capacity.  
 
UEPI includes a number of innovative food projects including the Center for Food & Justice, which have the broad mission of fostering a more just, democratic, and sustainable food system. These food projects seek to improve access to fresh and healthy foods in all communities, particularly those where access is most limited, and to facilitate strategies that empower local communities and strengthen the capacity of small regional farmers. 
 
Position Description
UEPI is seeking a candidate for the position of Program Manager to advance the work of UEPI and the Center for Food & Justice’s farm to institution and food access programs. The Program Manager will spend approximately 60% time managing and implementing farm to institution projects and 40% time on food policy and food access projects. The Program Manager’s responsibilities in the farm to institution area will include leadership of the California Farm to School Program, providing outreach and technical assistance to schools around the state, helping convene statewide farm to school partners, and conducting outreach and education about the farm to institution model including the implementation of programs at schools. The Program Manager will also be responsible for helping facilitate UEPI’s food access programs and work with UEPI staff to enhance the Institute’s multiple projects that include collaborating with diverse stakeholders to strategically
 work towards equitable fresh and healthy food access through market development, transportation, housing, and other related built environment strategies. The Program Manager will also work on regional food policy issues including helping facilitate the development of a Los Angeles Food Policy Council.
 
Job Responsibilities
Develop informational and curricular materials targeted at farm to institution stakeholders, including food service managers and farmers

Share the farm to school model through educational materials, presentations, workshops and maintain content of the California Farm to School Website

Convene statewide farm to school stakeholders through calls and meetings of the California Farm to School Taskforce and participate in the advisory committee of the Western Region of the National Farm to School Network

Support implementation of food access programs including farm to preschool pilot programs and other community-driven food access initiatives

Advocate for food access and farm to school policies at the state and local levels

Partner with key stakeholders to improve food access in under-served communities through research, policy, advocacy, and education

Assist with grant writing and fundraising
 
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in community food systems, public health, food planning, or food policy 

Excellent written and oral communication skills

Program management experience

Knowledge of food systems related topics

Ability to make presentations to and engage diverse groups of people including food service professionals, school administrators, community food advocates, and policymakers 

Detail-oriented and well organized

Self motivated, hard working, and dependable

Strong computer competencies including Microsoft Word and Excel

Must have own transportation, and be willing /able to work some evenings and weekends, and travel to conferences around the state and country as needed

Experience with grant writing and fundraising
 
Preferred but not Required
Advanced degree or equivalent experience in community food systems, public health, urban planning, social work, environmental policy, nutrition, or related field

Experience with food service or farming

Proficiency in Spanish

Computer skills such as desktop publishing and website management
