[Lapg] Perennial vegetable list wanted

Greetings to everyone reading and interested in this thread!

I've already sent a personal response to Cory but I couldn't let this thread go on without a plug forthe website of the California Rare Fruit Growers, www.crfg.org.
They've got a comprehensive list. Speaking of master lists and a well-deserved plug, Cornucopia II (713p, $40) by Stephen Facciola is the master
tome on edibles and that's not even all the plants that he could
possibly write about! No pictures but it is chock full of information. You will definitely get your money's worth. Contact Steve at Exotica Nursery in Vista - you know, the nursery that's in trouble that John Valenzuela wrote about. My master's thesis, titled "Coastal Southern California Edible Forest Gardening: Plant Species and Cultivar List", which lists species and cultivars is
a tad over 500 pages.

Remember that the climates of CA
and Florida are becoming more divergent. Think in the long term. I
can't speak for Florida but CA is becoming drier and water scarce yet with a measurable
increase in humidity. Each area really needs its own tailored list of
suitable plants. There will be some overlaps in the species lists but to do each of the places justice and to give each due respect, there should be an inclusion of edible endemic plants as well.

Kind regards,

 Wendy Talaro, M.A.

The main geographic focus of her work as a designer and consultant is Southern California. Fruits to Nuts specializes in using both CA natives and/or edibles in garden design and applied ecological principles so that beauty, productivity, low water usage, and relatively low/easy maintenance are the results. Well-considered design and restored soils in turn helps plants thrive and stay healthy. In essence, as a designer Wendy practices a kind of ecological homeopathy, using the tools of nature to heal nature.

Lots of lists out there. . .

My favorite, a must have for all food foresters, with an incredible range of climates included (Canada to Hawai'i):
Perennial Vegetables
From Artichokes to Zuiki Taro, a Gardener's Guide to Over 100 Delicious, Easy-to-Grow Edibles
by Eric ToensmeierPublished by Chelsea Green

After living in Hawai'i for 15 years,
here are some of my favorites greens for your climate:

Tree collards, Brassica
edible hibiscus, pacific spinach, Abelmoschus
katuk, Saropus
horseradish tree, Moringa
Okinawan spinach, Gyurna
Brasilian spinach, Alternanthera
Mayan spinach, Chaya

don't get me started on the perennial roots, and vines. . .
well, I can go on, and on, if you want.

Well, yes, please do get started on the roots and vines :-) Love to hear what you've had success with. I love the moringa! First introducd to it in Florida, I brought seeds to S Cal if anybody's interested. Beautiful plant, so useful for so many things and a possible life saving food source perhaps. And the Okinawan spinach does well in shade and heat both which is great for my yard in Fl. I haven't tried a number of the ones you listed, looking forward to it.

Have heard about this book, may need to break down and purchase...

Cory
