[Lapg] Seeking 2 hosting sites for sheet mulching workshops

It’s that time of year again! Urban-Suburban Ecoliteracy
wants to collaborate with two separate property owners who want to sheet mulch
a contiguous section or the whole of either a front yard or a back yard. Each
weekend long workshop will be used to demonstrate the what, when, how, and whys
of one of either of these two sheet mulches – one for a CA native/drought
tolerant garden and another for edibles.

What hosts will receive from us:
1)    One complementary visit for a site analysis.
2)    Up to 4 hours total of e-mail and in person consulting to
guide you through the process of sheet mulching preparation and to address
questions and concerns you have about your garden project. Garden labor and
design consultation/rendering services (i.e. what plants to pick and where to
put them in your garden) are not included.

Hosts are responsible for:
1)    Collecting soil samples and paying for Timberleaf Soil
Testing’s comprehensive test package ($85) if your site is selected for hosting
a sheet mulch workshop in prep for an edible garden.
2)    Collecting, preparing, and storing needed materials for the
workshops. Please note that the specifics of the compositions of the sheet
mulches and hence the quantities of materials needed will be determined by
results of soil testing (edible garden only), the kinds of plants a host or
hostess wants to smother and compost in place, and the type of garden that will
be planted after the sheet mulch.
3)    Buying supplemental materials if necessary.
4)    Completing the balance of work needed to finish the sheet
mulches in the event that workshop attendees are not able to finish due to the
size of the area to be covered and/or a small number of workshop attendees.
5)    Maintaining the sheet mulches by keeping them free of escaped
and colonizing weeds.

If you’re interested in hosting, please contact
Urban/Suburban Ecoliteracy via Facebook or Twitter @ecoliteracy_now.

> ABOUT MUIR RANCH
> Muir Ranch, located on the campus of John Muir High School in Pasadena, is a 2 acre urban farm. Founded in 2011, the Ranch is administered through the Pasadena Educational Foundation(PEF). Through the sale of cut flowers at farmer?s markets and private functions, and produce box subscriptions (CSA), Muir Ranch is able to provide paid internships to high school students year-round. Muir Ranch is a working farm where students, teachers, interns and volunteers prepare the soil, install irrigation systems, select and plant crops, and nurture and harvest the vegetables that find their way into school cafeteria lunches and community members? plates as CSA shares. Students acquire a variety of skills within the fields of environmental science, nutrition, engineering, business management and marketing, among others.
>
> Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is a model of food production and distribution that provides a direct link between local farmers and consumers. Every week, Muir Ranch CSA subscribers get a box of about 7-10 different types of fruits and vegetables. Customers pick their shares up at central distribution sites throughout Pasadena. Muir Ranch CSA partners with several local farms for seasonal produce to supplement Muir Ranch?s harvest, providing tax-deductible weekly boxes to over 100 subscribers.
