FLEXCAR: A TALK BY L.A. FLEXCAR GENERAL MANAGER MICHAEL WOO

A car sharing organization that could help you go car-free!!!! Are you ready?

at

Los Angeles Eco-Village
117 Bimini Place
Los Angeles 90004
(see Directions at bottom)

No charge but donations are welcome.

Michael Woo joined Flexcar in August, 2002 with over 25 years of experience
in transportation, affordable
housing, and public policy. He was the first trained urban planner and the
first Asian American to be elected to the Los Angeles City Council, where
he served for eight years. He chaired the City Council's Transportation
and Traffic Committee, and was directly involved in key decisions about
station locations and routing of the MetroRail Red Line system. Woo gave up
his Council seat in 1993 to run for Mayor of Los Angeles, surpassing 22
other candidates to reach second-place with 46 percent of the citywide vote.

Mike held a fellowship at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government
and subsequently taught courses at USC, UCLA, and Caltech. President
Clinton appointed him Western States Director of the Corporation for National
Service, the federal agency which runs the AmeriCorps*VISTA national
service program.

FLEXCAR now operates car-sharing programs for more than 9,000 members in
more than
a dozen cities and counties across the U.S. With flexible pricing plans,
members can
reserve and drive any of these cars whenever and wherever they need to,
without filling out complicated
paperwork, paying for insurance, gas or repairs. Flexcar has established
strategic partnerships in its
various cities. L.A. Eco-Village will begin to explore such a partnership
in our neighborhood.

Flexcar's innovative program provides members with access to a fleet of
environmentally friendly vehicles,
including gas-electric hybrids and electric cars. Here in LA, members have
access to vehicles in downtown,
Burbank, Pasadena, Santa Monica and Long Beach. Members reserve the
vehicles for hourly use with Flexcar
covering the cost of the car, gas, parking, insurance and maintenance.
Members access the cars via a specially coded Smartcard, and pay hourly or
monthly for use of the vehicles. Flexcar does not require security
deposits or dues to participate in its program.
See <www.flexcar.com> for a preview.

"THE ART OF NATURAL BUILDING": A SLIDE SHOW AND BOOK TALK WITH
EDITOR/AUTHOR JOSEPH KENNEDY
OF BUILDERS WITHOUT BORDERS

117 Bimini Place
Los Angeles 90004

Suggested Donation: $10 (sliding scale okay)

RSVP to Lois Arkin, 213/738-1254 <crsp at igc.org>

The search for housing that is healthy, affordable, and environmentally
responsible is leading a growing
number of people to take a fresh look at building techniques long shunned
by the modern construction industry.

Recently, books on specific techniques such as straw-bale construction, cob
or rammed earth have become
available, but there has been little to introduce the reader to the entire
field. The Art of Natural
Building fills that void wholly by being a complete and user-friendly
introduction to natural building for
non-professionals as well as architects and designers. From straw bale and
cob to recycled concrete and
salvaged materials, this anthology of articles from leaders in the field
focuses on both the practical and
the esthetic concerns of ecological building designs and techniques. Above
all, this empowering guide
demonstrates that anyone can design and build a home from natural materials
that is beautiful, low-cost, and
environmentally-sensible.

Profusely illustrated, The Art of Natural Building is divided into five
sections. The first provides an
overview of the natural building movement from the various perspectives of
sustainability, lifestyle, and
health. The second section looks at planning and design, followed by a
section that focuses on specific
techniques and the vast variety of materials used in natural building.
Next, examples of diverse natural
dwellings are shared--from a Hybrid Hobbit House to a thatched studio and a
cob office. Finally, complementary
systems, such as solar appliances, composting toilets, and alternative
power systems are covered. Packed with
additional resources and a bibliography, this is the encyclopedia of
natural building!

All three editors are central practitioners in the natural building movement.
Catherine Wanek is the publisher and editor of The Last Straw Journal.
Joseph F. Kennedy has expanded the
boundaries of ecological architecture with NASA's space station
habitability module. Michael Smith is the
co-author of The Cob Cottage (Chelsea Green, 2001), among other books.
