Lots happening this spring at Cal Poly and in the community - see below!

TODAY - Cal Poly is hosting its annual Open House.  Scores of booths,
demonstrations and tours.  Hope to see you here!  The Student Experimental 
Farm
will be hosting informal, lunchtime tours from 11-2 p.m.  A good chance to 
check
out the site if you have never been!

1. COMMUNITY SUPPORTED AG (CSA) PROGRAM
22 weeks of fresh-picked organic produce available weekly - grown by Cal 
Poly's
Organic Vegetable Production Enterprise class students!  Many delicious 
heirloom
varieties not sold in stores.  Weekly pick up at the organic Student Farm 
begins
May 19th.  Contact CSA Manager, Sarah Ritter, for details at 756-6139.

2. JOHN JEAVONS EVENT
John Jeavons is known internationally as the leading researcher, developer,
teacher and consultant of small-scale food production techniques utilizing
Biointensive agriculture.  Biointensive agriculture is a form of sustainable
agriculture which seeks to limit off-farm inputs and maximize productivity per
acre.  This system is highlighted in his best-selling book "How to Grow More
Vegetables Than You Ever Thought Possible on Less Land Than You Can Imagine".

Come experience John Jeavons' inspiring work and hear updates about his 
work on
projects world-wide on May 21st in the Business Rotunda (Bldg. 3, Room 213) 
from
7-9 p.m.  Free and open to all!

3. INTEGRATED PEST MANAGEMENT CONFERENCE FOR PEST CONTROL PROFESSIONALS
Leading industry experts will share cutting-edge information on topics ranging
from current regulations to biological and chemical pest control in a 
variety of
settings.  Intended for Pest Control Advisors.  Sponsored by the Cal Poly
Environmental Horticultural Science Club and the Horticulture and Crop Science

4. CONTINUING EDUCATION CLASSES FROM SARC
Two great classes for plant and garden enthusiasts will begin in July:
"California Native Plants: From the Field to the Garden", taught by local
ecological landscaper, Joshua Carmichael. Learn all about our local native
plants: identification, propagation, planting and garden care. (Three Saturday
mornings: 7/19, 7/26 and 8/2).
"Biointensive mini-farming and market gardening", taught by accomplished 
organic
farmers, Terry Hooker and John DeRosier. All the basics for successful growing
and small-scale marketing using the Biointensive method! (Five Saturday
mornings:
7/26, 8/2, 8/9, 8/16 and 8/23).

5.  33rd ANNUAL BIOCYCLE NATIONAL CONFERENCE in DENVER, MAY 5-7
A long trip to Colorado, but worth it for those interested in the latest
technologies in composting, recycling and renewable energy.  Student discounts

6. CONFERENCE on "MAINTAINING VINEYARD RANCH ROADS", May 21st 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
Sponsored by Monterey Cooperative Extension, the goal of the conference is to
educate private landowners on the Central Coast about road design and
maintenance. The key presenter will be Bill Weaver, Pacific Watershed
Association
Road Specialist. It will include approximately 3 hours of class time and 5 
hours
