hi there,

here is a unique permaculture educational opportunity happening this
summer...

White Oak Farm Permaculture and Natural Building Course
August 28 September 10, 2004
(with an optional third week of hands-on projects at no additional cost)

Location: The course will take place at White Oak Farm & Education
Center
in Williams, Oregon. The farm is a non-profit organic farm, sustainable
living education center for children and adults, and growing intentional
community. We are located in the beautiful and biologically diverse
Siskiyou Mountains of southwest Oregon (less than one hour from Ashland,
Medford, and Grants Pass). The farm is situated on a gentle south-east
facing slope, surrounded by forests of pine, oak, madrone, and douglas
fir. We are blessed with three ponds for irrigation, swimming and
wildlife habitat, a one acre organic garden, pastures, ample space for
camping and hiking, a communal kitchen, two yurts for staff housing,
outdoor showers and composting toilets. The farm is currently home to six
community members, forty chickens, and many thousands of honey bees.

Instructors include: Ianto Evans, co-founder of the Cob Cottage Company
is the primary reason cob has become popular in North America. He has
taught hundreds of courses on several continents, and specializes in being
a generalist, teaching by doing, and telling remarkable and inspiring
tales from his many adventures in building and design. Tom Ward, is a
Permaculture Design Course Instructor, cutting edge natural builder, and a
student of Systems who acts as a Counselor for Land Stewards. He has
taught Permaculture Design Courses for twenty years in Arizona,
California, Oregon, Washington and South Africa. Linda Smiley, co-founder
of the Cob Cottage Company with Ianto is another pioneer in the natural
building world. She brings a wealth of experience to her instruction in
earthen plasters, cob building techniques, and intuitive design. Jude
Hobbs is a horticulturist, Permaculture designer, and instructor. Since
1982, Jude's landscape design business has provided environmental design
solutions for urban and rural settings. Jude has presented permaculture
workshops and courses throughout the West for 15 years. Coenraad Rogmanns
is a man of many talents, bringing his skills in straw bale, cob and
appropriate technology including solar hot water, rocket stoves, pv
panels, and greywater to the course at White Oak Farm. We will also be
blessed with the insights and techniques of several local farmers,
builders, and permaculturalists; and will have the chance to visit a local
permaculture seed farm, and a recently completed cob/straw cottage.

Curriculum: The course curriculum will be the first of its kind on the
west coast. We will blend the best of permaculture and natural building,
by mixing hands-on and classroom formats, demonstrating the benefits each
movement can lend to the other, and engaging participants in designing and
building green homes in functional ecological contexts. Topics will
include: Building Site Assessment, PC Ethics and Principles, Economics and
Social Forestry, Patterns, Process of Design, Gardens and Animals,
Biotechture and Outdoor Rooms, Community Development, Housesite Vegetation
and Airflow, Living Roofs, Water Catchment and Storage, Greywater,
Irrigation and Firescaping, Natural Building Design Styles, and Healthy
Homes.
