Ecology-Community-Education-Network!
Dear Friends,
We
welcome this Spring with thanks and
appreciation for all of you who played a part in the past year for us
-and we invite you to join us again for more opportunities to
learn, work and play.

Last year, we traveled with our students from
the tropical ecosystems of Belize and Jamaica to the rural countryside of France,
and
from Hollywood and downtown LA to wine-country retreats of California.
Everywhere we went, we could see the
networks moving closer and closer to reaching "logical" mass- that point
in time when it just makes sense to enough people to change the dynamics of society
for the better!
With your participation, we'll continue to create the conditions for
sustainability to happen...

course in the Maya Mountains of southern Belize.
Our hosts, The Maya Mountain Research Farm, [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?llr=85radecab&et=1103647475233&s=1414&e=001m5Q7r1PbTTXKNxoZFMQgvdb0l--9OW03_fSbxlbKmahSVtWXLXOoapE4QGo77Wz0_ithN1a9MbSpa9E8An7dGjBl4FtphE5u1OOvZcM1nv-i-5lGN56pwg==]are reintroducing agroforestry management to the farmers of Belize and other Central
American countries, along with marketing strategies for premium cacao, vanilla and
other organic forest products.
The design course experience was a revelation in understanding the brilliance of
the early Mayans: their tropical ecosystem, thick with trees, vines and understory
in a seemingly random chaos, was actually a carefully cultivated food and resource
design. Ancient house and temple ruins scattered throughout the landscape are quiet
evidence
of that system's ability to support a once-sizable population.
The Mayan legacy continues today in the increasing numbers of small farmers returning
their land to the polyculture method. Patches of organically grown cacao and other
crops once again mix with nitrogen-fixing and fuel-wood providing trees, and grow
in a mosaic along with fruits, nuts and herbal understory that shelter a rich variety
of wild and domestic animals.
Jamaica
The seldom-seen-by-tourists villages of Jamaica's Treasure Beach are filled with
families and fishermen who are willing to assist with our long term goals of focused
development patterns: [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?llr=85radecab&et=1103647475233&s=1414&e=001m5Q7r1PbTTWIkiMCzh4kUuBSm03_zBrvOps43WshJ3W6BSGpp8mrlB0RJWtmiUeWYoSZXrWuJRekJRiWQxWCpL-cl-vfYr6vt_FIVtfAS-gHRlHDaUxvTICk_ZBagrQ_Uf3OyoWlIIoMNoyT0fkB2CGvWWUp8mBoFuSkJLkfAGQ=]hurricane relief, localizing economies, community
sustainability and utilizing tools from Permaculture Design to create economic growth
and a higher quality of life for Treasure Beach residents.
France
In our travels to southern France this past Fall, we witnessed a partnership that
has continued for millennia between human and natural systems: fields, forests and
waterways are managed to provide for the needs of the entire ecosystem, wild as
well as domesticated. Hhmmmm...sounds like Permaculture.
Along the roadways we saw wild chestnuts, hazelnuts and walnuts growing, as well
as apples, pears, hawthorns, medlars and berries of all types. Walking trails that
reach back to Roman times weave throughout the landscape, and their grassy edges
are rich "flowery meads", thick with culinary and medicinal herbs and nectar-rich
wildflowers.
Rural France was indeed a Permaculture slide show- everywhere you looked, there
was an example of integrated design. Towns and villages still support local and
regional producers of foods, crafts and the traditional building skills of the stone
masons, plasterers, and slate roofers.
We were fortunate to be introduced to
much of this world by old and new friends, who relocated to
rural France to create their pieces of heaven and share it with others.

City-Permaculture!
The future of sustainability is in our cities and towns. Urban neighborhoods are
ideal for the promise and potentials of Permaculture Design, embodying the social,
intellectual and physical resources needed to create a sustainable system... L.
Santoyo
In Los Angeles, we are seeing exactly this, with the increasing effectiveness of
the team projects in the popular LA
Permaculture Design Course series [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?llr=85radecab&et=1103647475233&s=1414&e=001m5Q7r1PbTTUJcegYNPP37Sb5kJe1dIr8rofTOkDSlfii1E54U9B-RGPMJPX-O1FzJOIHl-URPTDJYpl4nENu5PN75XGQ3TZ-5gfGUArXqmedzLZ_yvCQon96DTpiN_ha]. From the development of green residential
and business complexes, to helping local schools initiate green programs, to starting
community groups to work on neighborhood needs, EarthFlow's Design Course projects
have attracted the attention and support of officials from the LA Unified School
District, local artist groups, production companies and development firms. Stay
tuned for more news as these projects continue beyond the classroom...
In New York City, we return to conduct a Sustainable City Strategies seminar and
host a happy-hour gathering of social and environmental activists -designing solutions
for city life and beyond. Tell your friends to meet us at the Open
Center [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?llr=85radecab&et=1103647475233&s=1414&e=001m5Q7r1PbTTVlvDsQLGQGZJdxAt4ppGostHuq952sl5VnaLPD_VCDguCBMRH2l0GR8eoSLbpehmpBDeytNkPqHoAzvpTH9_Vxux0B97QnXLzqVn48O9BXJg==]in April and in the Catskills for a Certficate
Course [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?llr=85radecab&et=1103647475233&s=1414&e=001m5Q7r1PbTTU8lHTQRSbV2pUwDrpoK4sg7MGhXRsoQ2eFR90xm_iALAdcOJwRpSAoh8K4rjVIGZsJDVDPRVa1BPWZck-5c6-Ts53F2CfmApGXOSJwgC2LGkfa55iuPYLahgve5OO-SVc=]in August.

Back at the Ranch...
Our San Luis Obispo, CA course this past
year introduced students to a
variety of projects incorporating permaculture design, from
backcountry hideaways to suburban condos, all of them using the
principle of connecting to others to solve their needs. (As a final
illustration of their understanding of permaculture design, the class
turned the "problem" of snails in the garden into the
"solution" of elegant escargot appetizers at their
end-of-the-course graduation party).
Hands-on
Workshops -we have a variety of ongoing projects... Sustainable
Landscape Construction -Earthen Oven building -Earth Bag construction
-Natural Plastering -Straw Bale Barn construction, Arts & Crafts
and more.
