San Diego Unified Forms a Lunch Tray Taskforce

The San Diego Unified School District Board recently passed a ban on
polystyrene and plans to phase it out completely from the district’s schools
by 2015. A Lunch Tray Taskforce is currently looking at alternatives that
are recyclable/reusable/compostable, made from recycled or renewable
resources, cost effective and operationally feasible. The district plans to
run a pilot in some schools in 2011-2012 and if successful the new trays
will be rolled out district-wide by school year 2012-2013. Inika is honored
to be a part of the taskforce to find a sustainable solution for our planet
and our children’s health.

The Zero Waste Corporate Partners Program – A Win-Win-Win for Everyone!

The Zero Waste Corporate Partners program is a way for businesses to lead
the way to sustainability by example. Inika will work with companies to help
them achieve their sustainability and Zero Waste targets. A portion of the
savings realized in the process will support our work with schools.

Starting in July 2012, AB 32 requires businesses that generate more than 4
cu. yds of solid waste per week to either 1) source separate their
recyclables or 2) subscribe to a mixed recycling service that would separate
recyclables at the back end and achieve a similar diversion rate as source
separation.

Introducing a composting program for the cafeterias and zero waste friendly
purchasing, shipping and special events policies, will allow businesses to
go above and beyond their compliance requirements towards AB 32 to become a
‘Zero Waste Business’. Most entities are able to pay for their zero waste
programs by eliminating unnecessary trash service, diverting recyclables
from trash, realizing revenues from scrap materials wile gaining marketing
leverage for their commitment to sustainability.

We offer the following comprehensive sustainability planning services:

   - Waste audits and characterizations to create your customized waste
   profile
   - Generating savings by right sizing your waste service
   - Review of supply chain to identify source reduction opportunities (e.g.
packaging, purchasing, alternatives to single serve disposables)
   - Opportunities in recycling (identify lapses in current recycling
programs, introduce practices and identify markets to recycle new materials)
   - Organics recycling (cafeteria operations, food scrap management pre and
   post consumer)
   - Review of building operations and maintenance
   - Transportation, energy and water use
   - Toxic materials survey and product replacement recommendations
   - Incorporate Zero Waste into special events
