Fellow Advocates:
As many of you have probably heard, the Department of Pesticide Regulation
("DPR") has drafted proposed regulations (rules) for the agricultural use of
methyl bromide. Because this is a formal rule-making process DPR is required
to release the proposal to the public and hold hearings if requested.
Because methyl bromide is such a controversial pesticide DPR has decided to
hold 3 hearings. Although specific requests have been made to hold a hearing
in Ventura County DPR has scheduled the hearings for Watsonville, Fresno and
Ontario.

Due to the large use of methyl bromide in Ventura County, and the amount of
community concern surrounding that use, it is imperative that a hearing be
scheduled in this location to provide community members an opportunity to
participate in the process. You may have received a request to write a
letter to Paul Helliker at DPR, thank you if you have sent off your letter
(if you haven't sent it yet, please send ASAP). Would you also take a few
minutes and call your State Assembly Member and State Senator and ask that
they intercede and ask DPR that a hearing be held in Ventura County for the
upcomming Methyl Bromide Regulation hearings. You might tell them it would
be too difficult to attend a meeting being held in Salinas, Fresno or Ontario
and it is important to our children's health that there is a local hearing.

Their numbers follow:

For Ventura/Ojai
Assemblymember Hannah Beth Jackson 648-9943
Senator Jack O'Connell 641-1500 (ask for Cindy
Cunningham)

For Oxnard/Camarillo
Assemblymember Tony Strickland 987-5195
Senator Kathy Wright 522-2920

Many thanks!
