Hi everyone
>
>On Friday, May 19th from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. the Community Environmental
>Council will host a World Game workshop at Santa Barbara City College.
>
>There will be up to 200 participants including high school students, SBCC
>students, UCSB students and associated faculty. The workshop is facilitated
>by two professional facilitators from the World Game Institute in
>Philadelphia. Check their website at www.worldgame.org to see what they do
>and what the workshop is all about. There is no cost for participating in
>the workshop. Participants should
>arrive at the Santa Barbara City College gym a few minutes before 1:30 p.m.
>They will not be ticketing in parking lots on the SBCC campus that
>afternoon. A leader will be available after the workshop to sign
>attendance verifications for courses offering credit.
>
>During this educational workshop, participants will create a microcosm of
>the world and international organizations such as the United Nations, World
>Health Organization and UNESCO. Props that represent resources such as food,
>energy, technology and natural resources are distributed according to real
>world statistics. The game is played on a huge map of the world rolled out
>on the gym floor. Players will have the responsibility of meeting their
>basic human needs and solving regional and global problems. In three
>dynamic rounds, the players will interact and engage in trading, developing
>strategies and creative problem-solving.
>
>Specifically, in the the environmental workshop, in addition to meeting the
>basic food and energy needs of their population, participants must tackle
>the health concerns of the world's people and the planet. The earth's
>ecosystems are given a voice with four teams, representing the Hydrosphere,
>Flora and Fauna, Lithosphere and Atmosphere. Participants begin to see how
>environmental problems like acid rain or nuclear waste affect every area of
>the biosphere.
>
>After a second simulation round, the workshop concludes with a discussion of
>worldwide environmental problems and recent accomplishments in easing
>humanity's impact on the earth. Participants are encouraged to discuss
>local environmental concerns and how they can become involved in finding
>solutions.
>
>Please contact Community Environmental Council to reserve your spot:
>963-0583 (dial 0 for the operator). You can learn more about the World Game
>by checking their website at www.worldgame.org, or email jillc at rain.org.
