In an entertaining and thought-provoking presentation---The Big
Picture-Moving Toward Sustainable Building & Development---alternative
buildings materials pioneer and author David Eisenberg will explore the
larger context for design, development, and regulation as the need for
dramatic change in all human systems becomes ever more obvious. From the
use of alternative building materials and appropriate technology to issues
of national security and the health of our communities, the talk weaves
together many critical ideas, developing the foundation for a new set of
criteria for all of our decision making processes.

David Eisenberg co-authored the Straw Bale House, and is the co-director of
the Development Center for Appropriate Technology (www.dcat.net). He has
over twenty years of construction experience, including troubleshooting
construction of the steel and glass cover of Biosphere 2 in Oracle,
Arizona; building a $2 million structural concrete house; a hypo-allergenic
structural steel house, and building masonry, wood, adobe, rammed earth,
and straw bale structures. He currently leads a broad-based collaborative
effort "Building Sustainability into the Codes," with the goal of creating
a sustainable context for building regulation. He is Vice-Chair of the ASTM
E-06.71 Subcommittee on sustainability for buildings, where he leads a task
group developing ASTM standards for low-environmental impact building
materials and methods of construction such as earthen building systems. He
is a member of the Board of Directors of the US Green Building council,
serves on the Advisory Boards of Environmental Building News and Natural
Home Magazine, and is a member of the Tucson/Pima county Joint Building
Code Committee. He helped write the first load bearing straw bale
construction building code for the City of Tucson and Pima county Arizona.

PARADE OF GREEN BUILDING
SET FOR SPRING 2004 April 30 and Saturday May 1, 2004
Santa Barbara, CA-- For the last three years, October has meant time for
The Sustainability Project's annual Parade of Green Building. In 2002,
sustainable gardens were added to the list of over 20 notable green sites,
residences, and commercial/institutional buildings that were open to the
public on the daylong tour. But Fall is not a great time to showcase
sustainable gardens. As a result, the Parade of Green Building is moving to
Springtime. The fourth Parade of Green Building, which would have been held
in October 2003, is moving to Friday, April 30 and Saturday May 1, 2004.
The Parade Committee will again host a keynote speaker on April 30, the
Friday evening before the Parade. Preliminary arrangements have been made
with David Orr, chairman of the Environmental Studies Department at Oberlin
College and an expert on green building principles. Professor Orr oversaw
the development of Oberlin's Adam Joseph Lewis Center for Environmental
Studies. Orr summarizes the philosophy of that project: "Three years ago we
began the effort to design a building for the Environmental Studies
Program. We intended to create not just a place for classes but rather a
building that would help to redefine the relationship between humankind and
the environment--one that would expand our sense of ecological
possibilities. In the century ahead all of those who will be educated here
must learn how to:

* Power society by sunlight and stabilize climate,
* Disinvent the concept of waste and build prosperity within the limits of
natural systems--in ways that can be sustained over the long term,
* Preserve biological diversity and restore damaged ecosystems, and
Parade of Green Building

* Do these things while advancing the causes of justice and nonviolence.
To these ends the Adam Joseph Center serves as a part of the larger
education of the Oberlin community aimed to promote the practical skills
and analytic abilities necessary to reweave the human presence in the world."
On Saturday, May 1, 22 notable green buildings and gardens will be open to
the public and will debut for touring Saturday between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.,
in greater Santa Barbara. The green buildings and gardens are designed,
built and occupied in an environmentally conscious way.
The Parade Committee has also chosen the new Hayward Design Center as the
central site for the day. In addition to vendor displays, music and food,
the central site will host workshops on a variety of "green" topics.
Workshop topics include: energy systems, landscaping, interior design, and
building materials for remodeling. The Design Center, located in downtown
Santa Barbara, is itself a model of green building practices.

Tickets to the Parade of Green Building, including the Friday night
lecture, are ten dollars. There is an additional five-dollar fee to attend
the workshop series at Hayward Design Center. The tickets are available
through The Wake Center, 300 North Turnpike, Santa Barbara, 805/964-6853;
The Schott Center, 310 West Padre, Santa Barbara, 805/687-0812; and
livingreen at 218 Helena Ave., Santa Barbara, 805/966-1319 or by calling
683-6676.
"The goal of the event is to educate the general public, homeowners and
professionals in the building industry about green building practices and
encourage them to use these practices in their own building projects, "
said Emilio Casanueva, co-chair of the Parade committee. "As a part of this
year's Parade, we are moving towards being more comprehensive and includes
examples of sustainable neighborhoods and communities."

Tour participants will be able to view innovative projects and systems that
have been incorporated into pioneering projects. Project architects,
contractors, and green product representatives will be present at every
site with blueprints, samples of products, and literature, for those who
want to explore the technical and performance information of any given
element used in the buildings. There will be a kiosk at each site with
information explaining the guiding philosophy of the project as well as the
sustainable energy, water, materials, air quality, and waste management
features of that project.

www.thesustainabilityproject.org or contact Emilio Casanueva at (805)
