South Coast Earth Day Festival
Sunday, April 18, 2004

Over 100 organizations, technology displays, and vendors
Give yourself plenty of time to wander the booths, where you’ll find out 
how to heal your local creek, protect whales, address overpopulation, 
create sustainable vineyards, support our marine sanctuary, and preserve 
the Gaviota Coast. Indulge yourself with a chair massage or get painted 
with henna body art!  But wait, you’re not done yet! After grabbing a 
delicious lunch from one of our food vendors, you’ve got experts to talk to 
— everyone from green building contractors to natural pet care 
professionals to certified Green Gardeners. Then you’ve got 
environmentally-sensitive products to shop for— teas, soaps, and organic 
cotton, not to mention a Hemp Village, where you can shop for clothing, 
accessories, and products all made from hemp!

SCHEDULE

Waldorf School 10:00 a.m.
Students from the 4th grade class will kick off Earth Day with a recorder 
ensemble performance.

TBA 10:30 a.m.

Dancing Drum 11:00 am
African drums, masks, and interactive theater hit the stage with Dancing 
Drum's show "Listen to the Rhythm." Using rhythm as common bond, this 
performance shows how people can overcome their differences in a postive 
way and build community through drumming, singing, and dancing. Look for a 
special guest appearance from the McKinley School 5th Grade "RHYTHM KIDS" 
drumming ensemble!

Earth Singer featuring Christie Pearson & Melissa Ramsey 11:45 a.m.
Original vocal harmonies singing songs for the healing of the earth.

Circle of Life Ceremony and Dance 12:00 p.m.
Akima “Rick” Castaneda, of the Coastal Band of the Chumash Tribe will lead 
the Circle of Life ceremony honoring the four directions. People of all 
nations will be participating including Cherokee, Choctaw, Yokuts, Apache, 
Yaqui, and Aztec dancers.  Also joining in: 1968 gold metal Olympic 
ice-skater Suzy Chaffee (aka: Suzy Chapstick).

UCSB’s Middle East Ensemble 12:30 p.m.
The repertoir of UCSB’s Middle East Ensemble reflects the great diversity 
of cultures found in the Middle East.  You won’t want to miss their 
colorful and fast-paced song and dance performance. April 18, 2004  Earth

Student Environmentalist Awards 1:15 p.m.
The Community Environmental Council’s classes and individual youth will be 
recognized for Environmental Service Learning Projects as part of a science 
fair project, to fulfill community service hours, or as part of a scout or 
youth group project.

Conjunto Jardin 1:45 p.m.
Reinvigorating the lively son jarocho music of Veracruz, Mexico, Conjunto 
Jardin features the talents of the Harding sisters in the only womenled 
Veracruz music group.  Get swept away with their sparkling and rhythmic 
blend of vocals and indigenous percussion.

Seymour Duncan & Friends, featuring Jeff Pevar and Alistair Greene 2:45 p.m.
This all-star guitar set will feature Santa Barbara’s finest and best known 
guitar heroes, including Jeff Pevar of C.P.R.

The Messengers 3:45 p.m.
By popular demand...The Messengers sound is a blend of groove, folk rock, 
reggae, and improv jam with powerful harmonies and conscious lyrics to match.

ALO  4:30 p.m.
Hailing from the Bay Area and Santa Barbara, ALO (Animal Liberation 
Orchestra) headlines Earth Day’s solar stage with superb songcraft, 
instrumental prowess, infectuous energy, and dancefloor demolition!
Find out why ALO has earned such a fanatic following and why musicians such 
as Jack Johnson, the James Brown Band, and String Cheese Incident love 
making music with them.

Festival highlights

Green Car Show
Check out the cars currently on the market that are rated “greenest” in 
their class by energy groups and the Environmental Protection Agency. This 
includes the 2004 gas/electric hybrids from Toyota and Honda, as well as 
“ultra-low emission” and “super-ultra-low emission” cars from Toyota and 
Ford, and a clean natural gas (CNG) version of the Honda Civic.  Also talk 
with vehicle owners who have converted their cars and trucks to run on 
alternative sources of fuel — including a Chevy Suburban that now runs on 
clean natural gas, and a Ford truck that now run on biodiesel.

Children’s area
In this year’s theme of Become the Change, kids can get their faces 
painted, make masks, and get their fairy wings.  The natural world comes 
out to play with the bird sanctuary, Outdoor School’s reptiles and mammals, 
Wilderness Youth Project’s teepee, and a whale baleen demo and blubber 
simulation.

Free bicycle check-up
Avoid parking hassles and get a free bike check-up by local bike mechanics 
and the SB Bicycle Coalition.

Come in costume and win...
Use your imagination: come as your favorite endangered animal, or Earth 
fairy, or retro 1970s tree-hugger. Prizes will go to the best-dressed adult 
and best-dressed kid. Judging at the Community Environmental Council booth 
at 3 p.m.

Stop by the Santa Barbara Car Free and KLITE booths to register to win free 
Amtrak Pacific Surfliner® tickets, MTD bus passes, and a Dahon Piccolo D3 
folding bike with carry bag, compliments of Santa Barbara County Air 
Pollution Control District and Urban Bike Packer.

Come to the Community Environmental Council booth, where everyone’s a 
winner. We’ll give away gift baskets every hour starting at noon, and 
special baskets will go to those who become new CEC members at the 
festival. And register to win one of three grand prizes:  an electric 
Merida Power Bike or an Incline bike from Commuter Bicycles, or a sun 
cruiser from Isla Vista Bicycle Boutique.

Come for the Biggest Children’s Activity Area Ever at Earth Day!

Become transformed
Visit Babes in Fairyland for your fairy wings, get your face painted, head 
to Dancing Drum for mask-making, and visit the big Art From Scrap tent to 
make magic wands!

Bird sanctuary
The Santa Barbara Audubon Society will have live birds and a life-size 
puppet of a California condor!

Get wild
Join the Wilderness Youth Project in their teepee to learn primitive 
survival skills, such as identifying animals by their tracks, skulls and 
fur, making baskets, and creating fire!

Outdoor adventure
Check out the king snake, turtles, and other cold-blooded friends provided 
by Outdoor School and Rancho Allegre.  See how worms are beneficial to a 
garden and hear some stories of great outdoor adventure!

Oceans alive
Learn about the ocean environment with Waves on Wheels from the Santa 
Barbara Museum of Natural History or check out a blubber simulation and 
baleen demonstration by the American Cetacean Society.

Learn about watersheds
Build a real watershed model and test it out with UC Cooperative 
Extention.  Color a watershed mural and join Santa Barbara County’s Project 
Clean Water for other water fun.
