Admission info in last paragraph below Contact (805) 543-0639 or
grangeslo at yahoo.com (San Luis Obispo) - On Sunday, May 23, from Noon to
5:00 pm, the San Luis Obispo Grange will be hosting a "Meet and Greet"
Barbeque and pot luck with best selling author, gardening mentor, and
creator of the world renowned "Square Foot Gardening" method, Mel
Bartholomew. This will also be an opportunity for the community to learn
more about the Grange organization, with 130 year history of helping
agriculture, families, and communities throughout the country. The event
will be held at the SLO Grange Hall at 2880 Broad St., San Luis Obispo.
There will also be a drawing for a $20 gift certificate from Orchard Supply
Hardware to get your garden started!** Mel's first book "Square Foot
Gardening" became America's largest selling gardening book ever, with over
a million copies sold. His Square Foot Gardening TV series ran on PBS,
Discovery Channel, and The Learning Channel for eight years. He has left
retirement a second time to create the non-profit Square Foot Gardening
Foundation, to bring better gardening to all people of all ages, around the
world, including an innovative "Garden in Every School program." He will be
discussing his technique, the Foundation, and other issues important to
gardeners. Mel will also be available to sign copies of his book.** Square
Foot Gardening is a uniquely simplified method of gardening that produces
100% of the harvest in only 20% of the space -- AND -- without all the hard
work and drudgery of single row gardening. It eliminates hard work and
heavy digging or all-at-once harvest. It is more environmentally friendly
because you can eliminate chemical use altogether, and there is less
watering, weeding, and thinning. Those familiar with the Square Foot
Gardening method will be informed of improvements and updates to the
system.** With water levels and space availability being issues here in
many parts of San Luis Obispo County, this technique is perfect for people
who want to have fruits, vegetables, and flowers, without the traditional
work and wasted space. You can make your garden in a postage stamp type
yard, or on any deck, terrace, patio, or a yard too large to manage by
traditional methods. You can see how to make a raised bed, use containers,
or even create a "counter top" garden to provide access for elderly and
handicapped without having to stoop or reach. ** Participants will be able
to see more about the system and a small demonstration garden at the Grange
Hall. You can also sign up for classes that will be held at the Grange Hall
throughout the remainder of Spring and Summer, taught by an instructor
personally trained by Mel. Cost for the courses will be $20, and will be
held on various days and times, to be announced at the event. A portion of
each entry fee will go to benefit the Square Foot Gardening Foundation.**
Past projects of the Foundation include donating over 800 teaching gardens
to elementary schools in California, Utah, Maine and Florida; building
gardens for Habitat houses; Boy Scout Eagle projects; working with the
elderly; gardens for the blind, wheelchair gardening; youth correctional
facilities; missionary training; as well as projects in several third world
countries helping others become self-sufficient.** You will also have the
opportunity to learn about the Grange, a family and community oriented
organization dedicated to families, community needs, and agriculture. The
Grange has been dedicated to programs and issues in the community interest,
and is also structured to build a better community in the interest of
families and individual members. Whole families can join the Grange, with
membership available to family members as young as 12 years old with their
parents. Membership information will also be provided at the event.** Hot
dogs and hamburgers will be provided, and participants are asked to bring a
salad of some sort to share as a pot luck. Cost for the meeting,
demonstration, and pot luck will be $4 for anyone 12 and over, $3 if you
call ahead for reservations, or free if you join the Grange at the event.
Educators, and children under 12 will be admitted free. The event will be
from Noon to 5:00 pm. Mel Bartholomew will be at the event from Noon to
3:00, and food will be available from Noon to 2:00. For more information on
this event or the Grange, call 543-0639 or email grangeslo at yahoo.com.
