Subject: Job Posting -- Forestry Special Project Manager

Attached you will find a job posting for a job that we would like to fill within the next few weeks. It is a special projects manager position within Forestry. I'm posting internally today, and then elsewhere by mid-to-late week. Feel free to pass it along to qualified candidates.

This job involves a donor-funded dual campaign to bring trees to every available public space in both Brentwood and Sun Valley. In each case, the manager will work closely with community members and public agencies to create a shared vision of greener neighborhoods. This should be followed by audits of available tree locations in Brentwood and Sun Valley, using volunteers from local high schools. This in turn will be followed by community-specific Citizen Forester Training and neighborhood tree plantings.

A qualified candidate will be fluent in both English and Spanish, and will have some experience in community organizing and/or campaigns. The hired manager will be heavily involved in the development of this ongoing project.

This is the sort of community-focused tree campaign that many of us have dreamed of launching for many years. Thanks to the generosity of TreePeople donor Tom Saffron and others, we now have the resources to launch two such campaigns, which we hope will serve as models for similar projects in other Los Angeles County communities.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Thanks,
Jim

Special Projects Manager:

Brentwood/Sun Valley project

TreePeople's mission is to inspire the people of Los Angeles to take personal responsibility for the urban forest -- educating, training and supporting them as they plant and care for trees and improve the neighborhoods in which they live, work and play.

Our work is in the neighborhoods, schools, communities and mountains of the greater Los Angeles area. Our office is located in Coldwater Canyon Park between the Los Angeles basin and the San Fernando Valley.

REPORTS TO: Director of Forestry.

Responsible for: Developing and coordinating dual campaigns dedicated to “reforesting” the Los Angeles communities of Brentwood and Sun Valley. The overall project will act as a model for similar campaigns within other communities in Los Angeles County. Beginning with the organizing and recruitment of locally based groups to establish a shared vision of a greener community, the campaigns will proceed to train local students to lead the mapping and auditing of public spaces available for tree planting in each community. Community-specific Citizen Forester training will follow in which local volunteers will take on the responsibility of leading the block-by-block, neighborhood-by-neighborhood community tree planting events. The Special Projects Manager will be responsible for guiding and overseeing all aspects of these two-to-three-year campaigns.

DUTIES INCLUDE:

· Working with the Forestry Director to develop community-specific programs for Brentwood and Sun Valley. The development process will begin with recruiting, listening to and working with those who “live, work and play” in Brentwood and Sun Valley to form a representative vision for each community.

· Gaining the support and input of the agencies responsible for public space trees within these communities (i.e., Los Angeles Street Tree Division, Los Angeles Recreation & Parks).

· Recruiting and training students from local secondary schools to conduct audits of available tree spaces in public areas.

· Developing and overseeing campaigns to raise local interest and involvement.

· Overseeing and supporting the recruitment and training of Citizen Foresters from Brentwood and Sun Valley to lead individual planting projects.

· Developing and supporting ongoing and locally managed tree care programs for the newly planted trees.

· Recruitment of existing TreePeople volunteers to assist with projects.

· Managing internal accounting paperwork related to each project.

· Recording follow-up reports for the project’s donors and in TreePeople database.

· Developing synergy with other TreePeople programs, including TreePeople's other Forestry programs and programs within TreePeople's Education departments.

· Actively participating in all appropriate organizational activities such as TreePeople volunteer meetings and major fundraising events.

· Actively assisting other staff in daily activities such as loading trucks, making phone calls, updating computer databases, and assisting at an event.

QUALIFICATIONS:

· Sincere interest in the environment and the future of Los Angeles.

· Strong leadership and team building skills. Creative, flexible problem solver.

· Proven project management skills: planning, organizing, delegating, coaching.

· Must be bilingual (Spanish and English).

· Strong communication skills: listening, negotiating, public speaking, writing.

· Able to adapt to a variety of situations in two different communities.

· Computer literate.

· Ability to do physical labor: lifting, hauling, planting.

· Valid California driver’s license and clean driving record.

· Available to work Tuesdays through Saturdays and some evenings.

· Work experience in urban forestry, community development, project management, environmental, and/or education.

COMPENSATION: Full time position. Salary commensurate with experience. Benefits include medical, vacation, holidays and sick leave.
