2006 Northern New Mexico Bilingual Permaculture Design Course

Permacultura Curso New Mexico,
Summer 2006
A Spanish/English language Permaculture Design Course
by Santa Fe’s non-profit Permacultura America Latina
June 2-14, 2006

Permacultura America Latina (PAL) , a non-profit organization located in 
Santa Fe New Mexico,
will be hosting a bilingual 12-day permaculture design course in Spanish 
and English.
The course will give men and women an opportunity to learn ecologically based
permaculture principles that they can introduce to their work, home, and 
community.
Permaculture stands for permanent agriculture and is based on three ethics: 
respect for nature,
respect for people, and sharing the surplus.

Instructors:
PAL will be leading the course with lead designer, Jeff Mecham, the
director of one of our projects, ALLPA, in Tumbaco, Ecuador. Jeff is an 
agroforester and
permaculture designer with degrees in international development and 
environmental studies.
ALLPA is leading a project to save one of the last areas of equatorial 
cloudforest
in the Paso Alto Range of the Choco-Andes bioregion.

The course will also have local designers speaking about the New Mexico 
bio-region: Miguel Santiestevan,
a Taos native who is trained in agricultural ecology and has taught 
permaculture with
Traditional Native American Farmers Association (TNAFA), Paula Garcia, a 
Mora native
and president of the New Mexico Acequia Association,

Joel Glanzberg a local
permaculture designer from Regenesis Consulting in Santa Fe and Alfred Von 
Bachmayr,
a local natural builder who has been working in Juarez with Mexican 
nationals on alternative building techniques.

Jeff Conant the author of Hesperian Foundation’s Community Guide to 
Environmental Health will also be speaking at the course. These instructors 
will focuson dry-lands permaculture as well as cultural traditions of the 
region.

         A Permaculture Course Includes:

• Introduction to Permaculture; history, principles
and ethics
• Concepts and basic themes-principles of natural systems
• Methods for sustainable design
• Patterns of the Natural World-Modern
and Ancestral
• Climates and Microclimates- Site Analysis
• Water capturing, harvesting, recycling, and storing
• Clean energy design-solar and wind
• Strategies for cold and dry climates
• Sustainable and Ecological agriculture
• Gardening Organically
• Sanitation with composting toilets
• Living with Climate Change
Activities and Field Trips:

The course will include a mix of classes, hands-on activities and site 
visits to places such as Seeds of Change, local farms and the Dixon 
agricultural area.   Location:

Story Ranch, in Mineral Hill just outside of Las Vegas, New Mexico. Ranch 
owners John and Cindy McLeod, founders of the Rio Gallinas Charter School 
in Las Vegas will be hosting the course at their ponderosa pine ranch which 
includes beautiful views of nearby Hermit Peak and a spring fed rock 
swimming pool. The ranch is in the process of being turned into a 
permaculture community.

Cost:

Ordinarily a 72-hour certificate course such as this would cost $800 or 
more, but it is PAL’s goal, with the support of local contributing 
foundations and businesses, to offer the course to 20 plus individuals on a 
sliding scale from $500-600.

Housing:
Indoor lodging is limited; good camping facilities will be available and 
camping sites will be provided in a beautiful ponderosa pine forest 
setting

We will also be offering FULL SCHOLARSHIPS.
Tuition fees will include 3 meals per day, course materials,
and a certificate upon completion of the course.
