Plant Identification and Culture, E.H. 101 (Section 0173), is a
lecture/lab class that introduces to students over 200 plants, mostly
trees, both native and non-native, that are common to the greater Santa
Barbara area. The two hour lecture on Tues. night provides information
on plant characteristics and the three hour lab on Saturday afternoon
this semester takes the students into the field to see the plants from
each of the 5 learning units. The course begins with deciduous plants,
then on to evergreen, gymnosperms, monocots and dicots, and ends up with
a last unit of mixed trees, shrubs, and vines. An exam is given for
each unit, and a folder of phenotypic characteristics is required for
each unit as well.

Instructor Bio: Jan Schienle has been teaching horticulture classes in
the Environmental Horticulture program at SBCC for five years and will
be teaching E.H. 101, Plant Identification, in Fall 2006. She has
taught classes in Biological Sciences, Environmental Sciences, and
Ecology at CSUN, Allan Hancock College, UCSB, and the Ventura County
Community College District over the past 20 years.
