[Scpg] information about home solar

HI, a friend at work is interested in designing a solar energy system for his retirement home which he plans to have off-grid. 
  Propane heating with solar for appliances and such. 
  Anyone out there have any information on what they've tried, what works, what hasn't worked, etc?
