Intro to s'Cool Gardens Program 


SBCC Center for Sustainability has partnered with The Orfalea Foundation to spearhead the s'Cool Gardens Program, whose mission is to connect students to their food and environment through school gardens. In the 2010-2011 academic year, 5-7 vegetable gardens will be installed or enhanced in local elementary schools throughout the county. The Garden Installation Intern will primarily be working with the Installation Coordinator in the Santa Barbara and Goleta Unified School Districts.

Garden Installation Internship 




Requirements: 



    • SBCC student enrolled in a minimum of 6 units; 
    • Availability to work at least two full days a week; 
    • Person who is responsible, professional, and communicative; 
    • Ability to attend regular staff meetings; 
    • Willing to commit up to 12 hours/wk, occasionally on weekends, especially Saturdays; 
    • Must be in good physical health – comfortable with tools such as shovel and wheel-barrel. Able to do intense physical work (wheel-barreling, digging, carrying heavy materials, tilling, etc.); 
    • Able to provide own transportation within City of Santa Barbara; 
    • Confident on computer, adept with email, and proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel; 
    • Basic garden knowledge helpful but not necessary; 
    • Ability to work independently as well as well in a team; 
    • Like to laugh and have a good time! 




Responsibilities: 



Under the leadership of the Installation Program Coordinator the Garden Installation Intern would be responsible for work such as: 



· Irrigation installations 

· Garden maintenance 

· Photo documentation and managing archives 

· Writing reports and creating documents relevant to garden events 

· Community outreach – tabling at related community events 

· Campus/Student outreach – presentations to Horticulture & Environ. Science classes 

· Tabling on campus for events such as Earth Day 

· Volunteer recruitment 





Salary range: $11.00 - $13.50/hr, depending on experience. (Max. 19.5 hrs/week) 

Preferred start date: Oct 2010, negotiable depending on applicant's schedule
