Planting Water: Hydrological literacy for
rainwater harvesting, water reuse, conservation, filtration and purification.

Offered: July 29-30-31
Location: Commonweal Garden, Bolinas

This is a unique opportunity to dive deeply into
the skills, theory and hands-on practicum of
rainwater harvesting, water reuse, public policy
and cutting edge information as it pertains to
clean water access for wildlife, community, domestic and landscape use.

The instructor team offers a diverse set of
skills, vision and experience designed to round
out a full curriculum of hydro-logical literacy.
This 3-day training will include a combination of
presentations, panels, slide shows, tours and hands-on activities.

Topics will include:

• A panel discussion on the big picture–community
and global water policies, codes, watershed funding, coalitions and more

• Rainwater harvesting from roof water, as well
as, keyline patterning and broad acre rainwater harvesting and filtration.

• Earthworks: Pond building catch basins and rain
gardens. We will build a rain water run-off catch
basin and plant with a host of multi-functional plants for this climate.

• Integrating multi-functional planting systems for dryland climates.

• Water conservation techniques.

• Grey water and onsite water purification and re-use in the landscape.

• Fog harvesting: We will set up a fog harvesting
system for watering a cliff side landscape.

Commonweal Garden offers many innovative and
cutting edge water harvesting and conservation examples employed on the farm.

Water in the Sustainable Landscape: August 20-21

Michael Ogden – co-author of Constructed Wetlands
in the Sustainable Landscape – draws on his
wealth of experience to address the larger issues
of the water cycle, the impact of global warming,
and water availability. Visit the link below for
more information and registration.

Water in the Sustainable Landscape with Michael Ogden

Start: Aug 13 2011
Timezone: US/Alaska

Offered: August 20–21
Location: Commonweal Garden
Instructor: <http://www.regenerativedesign.org/michael-ogden-0>Michael Ogden

ASLA credit available

This course goes beyond the simple requirements
for various types of landscapes and plant
communities and addresses the larger issues of
the water cycle, the impact of global warming,
and water availability. It also addresses the
very important role landscape architects are
playing in the master planning process.

The course is intended for landscape
professionals and is designed to assist in the
understanding of the role that water plays in the
landscape and in the master planning process.
Attendees will receive credit for ASLA continuing education.

Course Outline

1. An introduction to the Hydrological Cycle. Let’s start with the basics.

2. Water & Energy – This section will address the
nexus between water and energy. This will be a
general introduction. The intent will be to bring
an understanding of the energy costs associated
with moving water, and the contribution to atmospheric CO2.

3. The Water Balance – This is a basic planning
tool and addresses sources and uses of water.
Notice that the title implies that sources and
uses are in balance. This section will require
some simple calculations as practice on
spreadsheets. Each attendee will be provided with
a spreadsheet that can run on either a Mac or PC.
The exercise will illustrate the iterative
process that is required to bring sources and uses of water into balance.

4. Potable Water – The section will challenge the
basic assumption that the necessary supply of
water will always be there for your project. This
section will deal with the processes behind water
allocation, solutions to shortages, and likely
scenarios for future water availability.

5. Stormwater – A very challenging and
interesting section that will discuss run-off
coefficients, design storms, the rational method
for calculating run-off, rainwater harvest and
cistern sizing, urban pollution, stormwater
treatment, CSO’s, rain gardens (how big should
they be), and some basic statistical concepts for storms

6. Wastewater – On site treatment and reuse. This
will be based on the new SITES Handbook (ASLA
sponsored design guidance handbook) and Chapter 5
which has been authored by the instructor.

7. Summary – The role of the landscape architect
in managing water in a sustainable landscape.
This section will tie together all of the
previous sections and their impact on the landscape and the planning process.
