Have you ever experienced 1st Thursday in downtown Santa Barbara? a
truly local event that encourages us to come out and enjoy our own
community....
1st Thursday is an award winning program highlighting downtown arts,
culture and entertainment on the first Thursday of every month.
All 1stThursday attractions are free. 5-8pm.
The SBCC Center for Sustainability will be hosting the Lexicon of
Sustainability exhibit at the 1st Thursday event tonight at the
corner of State & Anapamu Streets, in front of the Santa Barbara Museum of Art.

Edible Santa Barbara magazine & Bamboo DNA are our co-sponsors for
the evening event. Samy's Camera is sponsoring film development &
assistance for two students from the SBCC Projects in Sustainability
class who are creating panels to add to the Lexicon exhibit featuring
local pioneers in Sustainability from our region. They are in the
middle of their semester & projects, come learn about the class and
their evolving projects, and who they have selected as
subjects. Lexicon of Sustainability short films will be playing on a
small outdoor screen where you can learn more about this National
exhibit tour and its creator, film-maker and author, Douglas Gayeton.

What is the Lexicon of Sustainability...

A unique pop-up art show of visually packed collages, making a tour
across the country with local curators. Created by author, film
maker and photographer Douglas Gayeton, who has for the past three
years conversed with the foremost practitioners of Sustainability in
food and farming. They shared their insights and experiences and
contributed their words to our rapidly growing Lexicon of
Sustainability. The Lexicon project has also grown to include short
films, study guides, traveling shows, a book and a website where
people can add their own terms to this ever-evolving lexicon.

Gayeton identified 100 key Sustainability terms and began visiting
the farmers, fishermen, foragers, and chefs across the country who
could help him define them. By illuminating the vocabulary of
sustainable agriculture and the conversation about America's rapidly
evolving food culture, the Lexicon project gives people the tools and
knowledge necessary to create a healthier, safer food system in America.
The Lexicon of Sustainability Exhibit at the April 5 1st Thursday
event will include art/photo panels created by students in the SBCC
Projects in Sustainability class, who have interviewed local pioneers
in Sustainability from our region.

Sponsored by the SBCC Center for Sustainability
Co-Sponsors: Edible Santa Barbara Magazine & Samy's Camera

Special thanks to Gerard Minakawa of Bamboo DNA, who designed &
