SEED SAVING KIDS STATION

Available Throughout Event:

1. Loofa Sponges - display about this plant and seed saving (from loofas grown at Trinity Gardens.) KIds will peel outer, crusty seed coat and shake out seeds into a bin. Sponges are cut into smaller pieces so each kid can have a little sponge to take home. (Note: adults like to do this, too!) Floor area on small tarp used for this activity--seeds shaken out into tub.

 2. Making Seed Packets for Loofas, Christmas Lima or Scarlet Runner Bean Seeds. Kids sort and count out five, large bean seeds or a dozen loofa seeds to put into paper seed packet that they make--(decorate and assemble.) Table area used for this--paper covering a section of the table used in order to protect surface. Display shows plants that these seeds grow, with some information about these seeds/plants.

Scheduled 30 Minute Time Block Activities:

12:00 and 2:00 - Saving wheat seeds with The Little Red Hen
Kids revisit the story and decide to help with the wheat; they separate the seed from the chaff, then grind some in a hand grinding mill, but save some, too, for planting. (Note: kids can take some seed home in a small envelope.)

11:15 and 1:15 - Learning about the importance of seed saving through a Navajo story, Turkey's Gift to the People Using some props, the story is told. Seeds of different varieties are mixed up in a tub for kids to see the wonderful beauty and diversity of seeds, such as those turkey collected in the story. Kids are seated on the floor in front of the storyteller, who is sitting in a low chair or stool. Sorting like seeds into small containers is an optional follow-up.
