Ecosystem Restoration Camps: Making it Happen

€21,073 RAISED OF GOAL OF 55,000 Euros
The goal of this project is to raise 55,000 Euros to scale up the restoration of degraded land in Southern Spain, and the build of our first Ecosystem Restoration Camp.

Our Story: Ecosystem Restoration Camps is a people powered movement that arises from a simple idea. To join the dots between people with land that want to restore it, and people without land who want to help.We all know that our current trajectory is driving our planet to the brink. Our ecosystems are dying.

We need to change. And it is this understanding that has joined us, hundreds of like-minded people from around the world, to begin the great work of our time, restoring ecosystems and teaching each other how to do it. Initiated by Ecosystem Champion John D. Liu, this mission is supported by a large and varied network of dedicated earth restorers and experienced permaculture experts from all over the world.

What do we want to achieve?

Our first ecosystem restoration camp is starting up in the Murcia region of South Eastern Spain. This area is in dire need of restoration because sheep grazing, over-ploughing and climate change are making the land drier and less fertile every year. We have the knowledge and the plan needed to restore this barren landscape, and now what we need is to scale up the restoration of the land around the camp, as well as the build of the camp itself. We plan to have the camp built and able to host larger numbers of volunteers by April 2018.

We are not just aiming to restore the land, but to use this space as inspiration to industrially minded farmers that there is a different way of farming that does not destroy the soil and kill biodiversity. This will be the first of many camps, acting as a prototype for people from all over the world to learn how to restore degraded land and heal the rift between humans and nature.

What are we going to do?

So far we have been able to create water harvesting earthworks on the land, and purchase our first small batch of 100 different fruit trees. Now we need funds to put our restoration plan into place. The restoration will involve buying the trees, shrubs, cover crops and vegetable plants, as well as compost and an irrigation system to ensure the plants get the nutrients and water that they need. These trees will be planted to create an edible forest, a complete ecosystem using permaculture design thinking.

The build will involve creating the first manifestation of the camp, with straw bale dwellings to house anywhere from 4 to 12 people, a community hall inside a 25 metre geodesic dome, a fossil fuel free kitchen, showers warmed by the heat of the sun and dry composting toilets.

This camp will be open and ready to house between 20 - 25 people by April 2018.

Why is it important?

This project is of profound importance because it has the power to transform approximately 600,000 hectares from a state of becoming a desert, to a mosaic of thriving, biodiverse ecosystems.

We need healthy ecosystems to survive. We need them to produce clean drinking water and healthy food. We need them to save us from killer storms, droughts and floods. We need them to restore hope and a possibility of a safe future.

What is our impact going to be?

The impact of the project will be huge. It will kick-start the regeneration of land that is almost completely void of life, and start the build of a place where people from across the world can come and learn how to do the same. The land restoration will restore the network of living organisms in the soil, which will increase the water retention and carbon levels.

This carbon sequestration will mitigate climate change. Interactions with local communities will boost the local economy, in an area of Spain that is struggling.

This project will have a global impact on the climate, the health and wellbeing of all species, and the mindset of people from one of take - use - waste, to seed - grow - reuse.

?Quienes somos?
